Volunteers from the Youth Akali Dal and Students’ Organisation of India (SOI) gave their blood for their leader and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal…quite literally. In this, they were led by Shiromani Akali Dal MPs Rattan Singh Ajnala and Rajmohinder Singh Majithia, and MLAs Bikram Singh Majithia,Amarpal Singh Boni and Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal. They organised a blood donation camp in Amritsar to celebrate Sukhbir’s 49th birthday.

The huge hall of a private resort on the outskirts of the city was jampacked with volunteers. “We expect a record to be set when the units of blood are counted,” said Majithia who is the patron of the party’s youth wing. He said the donation shows their commitment to the youth to work for the society, and advised the youth to work for the eradication of social evils such as female infanticide, dowry and drug addiction.

“Leaders celebrate their birthdays by cutting cakes and distributing sweets, but we thought this is the right way to celebrate his (Sukhbir) birthday,” said Raju Khanna, head of SOI,adding that they were hopeful of collecting over 10,000 units of blood as over 25,000 youth donated blood throughout the state.
