The district administration unveiled a new programme on Wednesday to check corruption in the revenue department with the launch of a drive for land partition registration.

Under this, the patwaris will prepare records and provide services at the doorstep, said Deputy Commissioner K S Pannu.

The patwaris had been found demanding bribes from families whose land had been partitioned, for making changes in the revenue records.

“Various cases of corruption and fraud had been coming to light. When the families give consent to divide the land, why not set the revenue records straight?” said Pannu, adding the drive would benefit lakhs of people.

The whole process will be completed within a month,he added.

“The full-fledged drive will begin on May 15 and will continue till June 15. Hundreds of acres of land is expected to be put on permanent records and bring down disputes as well as crime,” Pannu said.

“Mushtarka Khata (collective ownership of family lands) had forced many families to go bankrupt,as sometimes one

brother takes loan against the entire land. This is a social problem apart from the economic disputes in the age of materialism. We will address this problem now”,said Pannu.

He added, interestingly such exercises were undertaken during the British Raj after every 10-12 years but after partition no such initiative was taken in Punjab . He hoped that other districts would also follow the suit.
