Panchkula storm fells tree, Sec 9 remains powerless

Residents blamed the horticulture department for not cutting the tree despite several complaints. They said a major tragedy was averted, as no one was on the road when the incident happened.

Several residential houses remain without electricity for more than 12 hours in Sector 9 after an old tree fell on the road following the storm and damaged three electric poles on Saturday evening.

Residents blamed the horticulture department for not cutting the tree despite several complaints. They said a major tragedy was averted, as no one was on the road when the incident happened.

“It was a 25-year-old tree and I approached them (horticulture department) and also the electricity board to cut it. But they did not act and it led to this situation,” said Surinder Nath, a Sector 9 resident.

He said the tree fell on the road following the storm around 5.30pm on Saturday. “We remained without electricity for the entire night. The horticulture department is responsible for it,” said Nath.

Another resident said there are several trees that can fell anytime. “They should act so that there is no damage to anyone in the future,” said another resident.

On Sunday morning, officials from the electricity department reached the area and power was restored in the late afternoon.
