Merit list out on June 30,counselling to decide fate of students

As many as 9,685 admission forms were submitted against the 11,000-odd forms sold for Class XI admissions in 105 city government schools till Friday, the last day.

This year, students are expected to have a better choice of schools and streams as the total seats (11,000) exceeds the number of students seeking admission.

The considerable difference in the submission and sale of forms is attributed to several students who secured Grade E in CBSE Class X being rendered ineligible.

According to UT Education department officials, the students who secured Grade E had also bought forms not realising that they are not qualified for admissions.

Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 16 and 35 remain the preferred choices among the students this year as well.

The common merit list will be displayed on the UT Education Department website on June 30 while the list indicating the allottment of school and stream will be put up on July 3.

Parents and students alike rushed to the admission centers set up in five government schools across the city as the last day of sale and submission of application forms for admission in Class XI drew to a close.

Following the overwhelming response on the first day of distribution of forms which lead to centers running out of forms, the last two days again saw the rush pouring in.

“We have experienced heavy rush in the last two days. We have not had even a minute’s rest since yesterday. Around 2,000 completed forms were received,” said an official on duty at GMSSS-23.

The principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School,Manimajra,Kund Bala revealed that just one downloaded form was submitted at the school.

“ Around eight students had come to us with downloaded forms, but when they saw that they had to pay Rs 100 for the form anyway, they decided to buy the original form included in the prospectus.” The school received around 1,900 completed forms by noon on the last day,1,600 of which they had already checked and sent to the Education department. “We saw most of the rush coming in before the last two days. It is almost over now though some people are still coming to buy the forms”,she added. Thirty forms were sold on the last day.

The students and parents were seen in an anxious mood, with the admission totally dependent on counselling. “I want to take admission in the school in Manimajra as it is the closest to my house, but I do not know if I will get through the counselling,” said Renu Gupta. Monika, who has applied for the Humanities stream, echoed the sentiments. “I have heard that the school in Sector 23 is quite good, but I do not know if I will get through.”

The staff on duty at the various centers were also apprehensive about submitting incorrectly filled or incomplete forms. “This year people have to fill in codes instead of names of schools or streams. We have to check the details very carefully so that no incomplete form is submitted,” said an official in GMSSS,Sector 23.
