Open credit system at PU this year

For students of Panjab University (PU) who wish to opt for additional subjects while specialising in one subject during post-graduation,here’s a reason to cheer. In a bid to promote broad-based subject specialisation,PU proposes to launch an “open credit system” from this year. The system operates on two levels – within the faculty and across faculties. For instance, when a student of MA English opts for any other subject from the faculty of Arts, which may include Music,Political Science or others, the credit evaluation will take place within the faculty.

On the other hand,if the same student of MA English opts for a subject from the faculty of science, which for instance may include Physics or Botany, then the credits earned are counted from across the faculty. In both cases, the ratio of credits decided for the system will be 80 to 20. Here 80 points will be lifted from the student’s score in his or her main course and remaining points calculated from credits earned from the optional subjects.

The scores of the optional subjects, thus, contribute to the final score in the master’s degree by 20 per cent. “As per the discussions,a student needs to earn 80 per cent credits from his department and can earn 20 per cent of the credits from the exams he or she takes from other departments,” said BS Brar,Dean University Instructions (DUI).

While the proposal for the introduction of the system was mooted last year,it took the University authorities long to consider it.

“The concept appeals to everyone in the management as well as faculty members. However,we will have to introduce the system in small phases. Since there will be a wide variety in the choices of the students, the teaching hours for the optional classes and the examination schedules will have to be considered individually. We might need a special committee to monitor the system,” added Brar.

He also informed that the lectures for the optional subjects will preferably be scheduled after 12 pm.

For now,we have planned to take up the system in two ways. “A common time slot will be fixed for all departments so that students from every department can go for studying the chosen subject without any confusion. It will be the same slot for the entire university and during this time, only optional classes will go on. The second option is to allow students to decide the time slot in a manner that it does not clash with his own department’s schedule,” Brar said further.

The new academic session will begin by the end of July this year. At present there are a total of 65 departments and research centres in PU.
