After Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa and MLA from Dakala Lal Singh,it was the turn of Moga MLA Joginderpal Jain to project Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Capt Amarinder Singh as the chief ministerial candidate of the party in the upcoming Assembly polls. This comes even as Punjab affairs in-charge Gulchain Singh Charak,Leader of Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and even Amarinder himself having stated in the last few days that a decision on this issue was the prerogative of AICC chief Sonia Gandhi.

Speaking during the party’s Punjab Bachao Yatra at Amarinder’s ancestral village Mehraj,Jain said it was not far when Amarinder will take the reins (of Punjab) as chief minister. The rally was related to two Assembly constituencies — Bhucho (earlier Nathana) and Rampura Phul.

Buoyed by the impressive turnout,Charak was all praise for Amarinder. He termed the former chief minister as “a tree”,which had such “strong roots” that it can withstand any storm. “After watching today’s rally,I want to congratulate you that you have such strong roots,” Charak said, equating Amarinder’s functioning, calibre and popularity to Congress leader Madhav Rao Scindia. “After Madhav Rao Scindia,I am lucky to have got a chance to work with a similar personality like Capt Amarinder Singh in my life,” Charak told the gathering, adding that there was “a wave and a message” in favour of Amarinder in the ongoing Punjab Bachao Yatra. “This is not a mere yatra for me,but is a tirathyatra (pilgrimage),” Charak said.

Speaking on the occasion,Amarinder again labelled Badals as golak chor. “Badals are golak chor. When they do not spare religious places, why they would spare you and me?” Amarinder asked the crowd.

He also accused the Badals of unleashing vendetta politics against Congress workers. Naming Akali leader Sikander Singh Malooka and Akali MLA from Barnala Malkit Singh Keetu,Amarinder vowed to avenge the excesses committed on Congress supporters by the Akalis.

He also hit out at the government for “failing” to address the issue of “unemployment”,pushing state into an “economic crisis”,taking “anti-peasantry” stances and for “failing to check deteriorating law and order situation in the state”.

From the Rally

* Calling Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal a niana (kid),Amarinder’s son Raninder Singh said that Sukhbir had complained to the Election Commission that “Maharaj Sahib (read Capt Amarinder Singh) had been asking his supporter to pick lathis against Badals and this was vitiating the atmosphere of the state”. “I want to ask that when vendetta was unleashed and Congress men were targeted, was the atmosphere not vitiated at that time?” Raninder said, referring to municipal, panchayat and zila parishad polls. “He may go to Parliament or the Election Commission,we will pick lathis,” Raninder warned as a responsive crowd acknowledged his gesture.

* To show how people were attached to his family, during his speech,Raninder randomly asked a person from the rally to name his grandfather. However, much to his embarrassment, the man drew a blank and someone else from the crowd shouted the name of his grandfather. Raninder was quick to shoot the subsequent question asking the gathering if anyone in the crowd knew the name of Sukhbir Badal’s grandfather.

* In what appeared listing of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s diet chart,Amarinder said Badal ate two kilograms of fish and six tittar (a bird) daily and this was why not many tittars were seen in the area.

* As Gulchain Singh Charak came to the rally wearing a turban,Amarinder said Charak looked like exactly like him in his new avatar.

* Amarinder compared Badals with Jagga Daaku saying that only difference was that Jagga Daaku used to do small time loot whereas Badals indulged in loot at “massive scale”
