It is perhaps one of the most important rules of fashion that the most charming of outfits can sometimes look incomplete,if not paired with the right accessories. But in her almost decade-long experience of working in the fashion industry,city-based designer and stylist Bhavneet Kaur Ahuja always felt that little importance was being given to accessories. People put a lot of effort in selecting jewellery, but dont realise that one can make a statement with just a bag or a coordinated stole. Not many designers venture into this segment, says the 31-year-old,who is all set to roll out her collection of ethnic-chic bags, coordinated with her Spring-Summer collection of apparels, which includes suits and tunics.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology,Delhi, alumnus who studied leather apparel and design technology, went on to work in leading leather export houses. I taught fashion designing at NIFT and the Inter National
Institute of Fashion Design. Though I launched my label a few years back,I could never find enough time to do what I wanted to do,as I was working as a wardrobe stylist, says she.
Having taken a break from teaching,Ahuja has put her leather designing skills to optimum use. The result is an offbeat collection of bags in suede, highlighted with block-printing and scarves and stoles to match. The leather is all-Italian and I sat with Indian craftsmen to create motifs to go on the bags. I chose to highlight the linings as well. Having struggled with bags without enough compartments,I made sure my bags boasted of the same, explains the designer. We admired the wrist pouches, clutches and hobos with paisley prints on them.
Quite like her apparel collection, which makes the most of block-printing in fabrics such as silk and cotton, the collection of bags are in earthy hues. The price range? While the bags are priced at Rs 500 onwards, the coordinated stoles and outfits start at Rs 700 and Rs 1,200 respectively.
Ahuja will present her collection of apparel and accessories at a two-day exhibition to be held at Hotel Aroma, starting April 23.
