‘Not parties, but voters will decide issues to be addressed’

Demand for more hostels in the campus remains the most important issue among the students, and also the top agenda for most organisations

With Student Council elections in Panjab University (PU) just around the corner, the buzz word among the students on the campus is not to get lured by the lengthy manifestos of various student organisations, but to chose their own issues for the organisations to address.

“Each year, before the elections, all the student organisations promise to work for the welfare of students, but once they get elected, all the main issues are forgotten or ignored. But,this year,we have decided to vote for the party which will address the issues selected by us,” said Sonam,a student of Department of Economics.

While the demand for more hostels in the campus remains the most important issue among the students,it is also the top agenda of most student organisations contesting the elections. “With new courses being offered in the university every year, the numbers of students coming from far off places has also gone up,leading to increase in the demand of hostel seats,” said one of the student leaders.

Apart from increasing the number of hostels, majority of students have also stressed upon the need of a functional placement cell in all the departments and a better transport facility in the campus. “There is an urgent need to increase the number of buses and ensure that they run on continuous basis, since there is no proper way to commute in the premises.” Another student Nitish Bhargava, from School of Communication Studies adds that the parking facility for the vehicles on the campus also needs to be upgraded,as the parking of cars on both sides of roads lead to chaos.

Among other issues raised by students included proper seating arrangements at the Student Centre, upgrade of the departmental libraries and timely update of the university website.

Construction of a new Student Centre in the south campus has been also demanded by the students of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET). “It becomes difficult for the students in the south campus to come to the Student Centre in the north campus for lunch and then return to classes,” one of the UIET students points out.
