The Panjab University has clarified that there were no irregularities in admission to the reserved category seats. Explaining the admission process,a spokesman of the university said that after normal admissions were over,the university received a grant of Rs 5 crore from the Central Government for implementing the OBC quota. On September 4,2008,the Syndicate had decided to fill all seats. According to the decision,if no candidate was available on the waiting list,fresh applications would be considered strictly on the basis of merit. Subsequently,advertisements were published in newspapers to invite applicants for various departments, the spokesman said. In the Department of Laws,15 seats remained vacant under the OBC category which were filled up as per directions of the Supreme Court and under the rules framed by the university. It is incorrect to say that all the seats were given to PU employees. There is no question of favouritism and all admissions were made strictly on merit, added the PU official. Till date,the Department of Laws has not received any complaint from any candidate who appeared in the entrance test and was denied admission,the spokesman pointed out.
