Next time you visit a government office, you may get to read an article from an international drug peddler or see a painting from a murder convict in a newsletter. In a novel initiative by the jail authorities, around 650 inmates of Burail jail will soon have their very own newsletter, which would publish the activities undertaken in the jail.
The quarterly newsletter Nayi Subah will be published in English. Speaking to Newsline,DIG Alok Kumar said,The 8-10 page newsletter will highlight the productive work being done in Burail Jail, which generally goes out of public notice. The first edition (1500 copies) will come out in a few days and a decision on whether it will be being black & white or coloured will be taken soon. The first edition is expected to have an equal number of pictures and articles.
The articles will be edited by a team comprising jail officers and staff. We plan to circulate the newsletter in all jails of the country and UT government offices. The newsletter will also be available to inmates in the library, said DSP (Burail Jail) Amandeep Singh. In the first edition only activities taking place in the jail will be carried but from subsequent editions, the inmates too will be involved.
We have 250 inmates who have interest in painting, poetry and stories. For future editions we will make sure that the good pieces are carried in the newsletter in order to motivate others to contribute, added the DSP. Over the past few months, some professional courses like poultry, gardening and cookery, apart from Art of living sessions, have been started for the inmates. A programme by inmates was held too in the jail premises last year.
