BJP’s Sanjay Bhatia is an agriculturist by profession and did his Bachelor in Commerce from IB College, Kurukshetra University of Haryana. A resident of Model Town in Karnal, Bhatia was born on July 29, 1967 in Panipat of Haryana. He is an old BJP worker and contested the Lok Sabha polls from Karnal for the first time in 2019 and won. Bhatia remained member of Standing Committee on Home Affairs; Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament; and Consultative Committee of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. This time, however, BJP replaced him with former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar as party’s nominee in Karnal. Sanjay was tipped to be made party president in Haryana, but it has yet not been done.

Karnal constituency also comprises significant SC voter population at approximately 19.8 per cent. There are around 62.3 per cent rural voters and around 37.7 per cent urban voters. The literacy rate of Karnal constituency is around 65.1 per cent. The constituency also has around 5.58 per cent Sikh voters while the Muslim population is estimated at around 4.37 per cent. Currently, out of nine assembly segments, BJP represents five and Congress represents three. One seat that was represented by Haryana’s former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar who resigned to make way for Nayab Singh Saini as his successor, is now vacant. Khattar is now BJP’s candidate from Karnal Lok Sabha seat. Karnal has nine Assembly segments, including Nilokheri (SC) (BJP), Indri (BJP), Karnal (BJP), Gharaunda (BJP), Assandh (INC), Panipat Rural (BJP), Panipat City (BJP), Israna (SC) (INC), Samalkha (INC).

While the BJP has fielded former CM Manohar Lal Khattar, Congress has given ticket to Divyanshu Budhiraja. SAD (Amritsar) has nominated Harjeet Singh Virk.
