A day after two senior leaders of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD),Gaganjit Singh Barnala and Baldev Singh Mann, were ousted from the party’s primary membership on charges of “working against” nominee Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, the supporters of Youth Akali Dal (YAD) president Kiranbir Singh Kang have come out in support of their leader apprehending similar action.

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, nearly 20 Akali leaders, including Mokha Singh Gharuan,Bahadar Singh,Sewa Singh,Kulwant Singh and Kirpal Singh, claimed that Kang and his supporters had wholeheartedly supported SAD nominee Dr Daljit Singh Cheema from Anandpur Sahib Parliamentary constituency.

Following Cheema’s defeat by over 50,000 votes from Mohali and Kharar, the party, according to sources, was looking into the possible factors that led to the poor performance.

Though Cheema denied any party leaders worked against him, several local leaders apprehend the defeat will take toll on “somebody”.

Going a step ahead,Kang’s supporters went to the extent of holding the party’s area in-charge responsible for the debacle in the elections. Without naming late Punjab Cooperation Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh’s son Jasjit Singh Bunny, who is SAD affairs in-charge for Mohali and Kharar,Kang’s supporters averred that the responsibility of defeat always lies with the area in-charge,whom they squarely blamed for the defeat.

Ever since the election results were declared, rumours were rife that a senior party leader was being axed from the party but so far no such action was declared. Kang, who is believed to be a close aide of SAD chief and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, was strong contender for party ticket from Anandpur Sahib but was not accommodated.
