Politics over the move to dislodge the Congress-led ruling group from the Mohali Municipal Council (MC) on Monday took a new turn when the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-led opposition group withdrew its requisition for calling a special House meeting to bring a no-confidence motion against MC president Rajinder Singh Rana.
Taking benefit of the backtracking of the opposition group, the ruling group called a special MC House meeting on the requisition to move a no-confidence motion.
In a joint communication addressed to the MC president and MC Executive Officer (EO),a group of 18 councillors, led by senior vice-president Harman Preet Singh, requested the MC authorities not to act on their requisition submitted on September 29 as they have decided to withdraw it for certain reasons and future decision in the matter would be intimated in due course of time.
On September 29,the opposition groups requisition had signatures of 21 councillors.
Speaking to Newsline,Prince said since the election of one of their group councillors Kulwant Singh, who was recently declared victorious in an election petition was not yet notified, they had decided to postpone the no-confidence motion.
On the other hand, the MC president has convened a special MC House meeting on Wednesday at noon and issued an agenda to all the councillors.
Terming it abuse of power and law,Prince said all 18 councillors of the opposition group would boycott Wednesdays meeting as it was called after they withdrew their requisition.
We would call on Director,Local Government,to seek the removal of the MC president on charges of misuse of power and law, he said.
As per law provision,one-third (21) of the total 31 councillors are required to pass the no-confidence motion while minimum half (16) of the total councillors strength is required to conduct a special MC House meeting.
Law also provides that if a no-confidence motion fails, requisition for bringing it again cannot be moved for at least next 6 months.
