The Ludhiana Rural (Jagraon) police have arrested two policemen and recovered 1 kilogram opium from them. The police said they were tipped off about the two by a drug-addict who was a regular customer of the accused.

The two accused policemen are Balwinder Singh, who is the driver of Moga DSP (City) Balwinder Singh, and Kuldeep Singh, who worked as a naib officer in a local court but is currently under suspension. Kuldeep,a constable-rank officer, already has an NDPS case registered against him, besides one of moral turpitude.

DSP Balwinder Singh is currently not in India.

SHO Waryam Singh said: “Balwinder has been in this trade for quite some time. He used to sell drugs to people in Jagraon too. In one such deal,he sold ‘dudh’ — the code for pure opium — to a person at a high rate. The product, however, turned out to be impure. The buyer got angry and approached us. We laid a trap and caught the two red-handed while supplying the contraband.”

Waryam Singh added that they were on the lookout for a third accomplice,Karaj Singh. “During questioning,Balwinder told us they had bought 3 kg opium for Rs 45,000 per kg and were selling it for Rs 60,000 per kg. To earn some extra bucks, they had increased the quantity by mixing it with some other products.”
