Missing cop exchanged 2,000 calls with colleague

Police check unclaimed bodies to see if any match Reeta’s description

Having failed to make any headway in locating constable Reeta, the Chandigarh Police has now started checking unclaimed bodies in Haryana and Delhi to see if any of them match her description. Over the last two days, two teams of policemen, carrying Reeta’s photos, have been visiting police stations in Haryana and Delhi to find clues in the case.

Police are also questioning constable Ravinder — with whom Reeta was last seen in Chandigarh — his wife, and a woman constable Urmila who lived with Reeta. Police sources said that Reeta and Ravinder had exchanged about 2,000 calls between them in the last year.

“Constable Ravinder maintains that he does not know anything but we are not able to believe him because of the number of calls exchanged between them. Being in contact with her so much and then denying that he does not know anything about the case is not believable,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (Central) Ashish Kapoor said.

Ravinder’s wife however has told police that he was like Reeta’s elder brother. Constable Urmila, with whom Reeta used to stay, told the police that Reeta stopped living with her a long time back and she did not know anything about her disappearance.

Inspector Dilsher Singh Chandel, SHO of Sector 17 police station, said, “We are probing all angles but so far there is no clue as to what happened to the constable”.

Constable Reeta, who was posted in the control room, went missing on June 8 after she had boarded a bus from her village Chulkana near Panipat, ostensibly for Chandigarh.

On checking her mobile phone locations, police found that Reeta had three cellphone numbers and, according to the family, she used all of them.

On June 7 and 8, when Reeta was in Panipat before she went missing, one phone was used extensively, allegedly by her brother Rohit.

A second phone, which Reeta actually used, was traced from Panipat to Karnal on the night of June 8 and was in Karnal until 4 am on June 9 before it went off. Ravinder’s phone was also reportedly in Karnal at that time. Since then, Reeta’s phone has been switched off.
