Mega projects worth Rs 12,000 crore shaping up Future City

Work has begun on the Rs 12,000-crore worth mega projects planned for Mohali with an aim to transform what it is presently known as Chandigarh’s poor cousin into the Future City.

Work has begun on the Rs 12,000-crore worth mega projects planned for Mohali with an aim to transform what it is presently known as Chandigarh’s poor cousin into the Future City.

As the mega projects get rolling,Newsline takes a look at their present status and the future ‘Punjab’s Noida’,as envisaged by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal.

CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT
Work began on February 24 to create a business,cultural,recreational and shopping complex over 250 acre in Sector 62. The centre is estimated to cost Rs 4,200 crore and is being designed by Singapore-based Jurong International. The project is expected to attract Rs 7,000 crore in investments and generate 40,000 jobs.

TEN-STORIED ISBT-CUM-COMMERCIAL COMPLEX
The ISBT complex will be ready in another 18 months and the attached commercial complex in 30 months. The construction work has been undertaken by Delhi-based C&C Constructions Ltd. Spread across 7 acre in Sector 57,the state-of-the-art project will have facilities on a par with airports and will generate Rs 3,445 crore revenue within a lease period of 90 years.

SUPER-SPECIALITY CANCER HOSPITAL
The 200-bed facility in Phase VI will be completed by April 2011 at the cost of Rs 113 crore through PPP (public-private partnership) by Max Healthcare.

MOHALI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The Airports Authority of India have already received 305 acre to construct an international airport terminal building at the cost of Rs 540 crore. International flights likely to begin this year.

MOHALI-PHAGWARA EXPRESSWAY
Work began in February to create the six-lane direct link between the international airports in Mohali and Amritsar through NH-1 at the cost of Rs 5,000 crore.

KNOWLEDGE CITY
381 acre have been allotted to the Union government for housing the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER),the Institute of Nano-Science Technology (INST),the Biotechnology Cluster. Seventy acre have been leased out to the Indian School of Business in Sector 81. Construction work for the IISER campus has already begun,while work on roads and other allied infrastructure within the Knowledge City is underway.

Other projects in the pipeline are the Expressway around Mohali,IT Tower,the Punjab Habitat Centre,a hotel and international convention centre,the Institute of Hotel Management campus,an AC fruit and vegetable market and a fast food centre. Expressions of interest have been invited for projects over Rs 2,100 crore.
