Mayor: Civic body will not pay for inauguration functions

The Municipal Corporation approved agenda items worth more than Rs 15 crore during the House Meet held today. These included estimates for construction of roads and laying paver blocks.

High expenditure on inaugurations,etc was also discussed.

Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh announced that for the remaining part of his tenure the civic body would not bear any expenditure on such functions and if the councillors wanted functions to be held they could do so on their own or involve the area residents for the same.

Heated arguments were witnessed on the issue of augmentation of water supply through Kajauli Water Works. The proposal to approach Punjab with the proposal to install pipelines with bigger diameter to ensure enhanced water supply to the city,was deferred. The issue would be taken up in the next meeting of the House after clarification is sought from JNNURM whether they would provide funds if Chandigarh and Punjab have a joint project. A feasibility report was also sought and clarification on who has made payment for land acquisition in Punjab.

Councillor Jatinder Bhatia raised the issue of the work that has been approved,yet not started.

These include the Food Street in Sector 48,whose foundation stone was laid two years back. The issue of vacancies for ex-servicemen not filled up in the Municipal Corporation was taken up by Brig K S Chandpuri (Retd).

The House condoled the death of Punjabi playwright and theatre personality Gursharan Singh who passed away on Tuesday night.

Councillors commended the officials for the work undertaken during the recent storm in the city. It was,however pointed out that there was a need for pruning and chopping off the dead trees. At places,the remains of the trees have not been picked up.

It was decided to rename Terraced Garden as Martyrs Terraced Garden. Councillor Pardeep Chhabra raised the issue that the freedom fighters memorial at Leisure Valley be spruced up.
