Catch the excitement from the opening day of the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai

Never thought that a fashion show could emulate the grimy local trains of Mumbai? Think again, because Mumbai’s posh restaurant Tote on the Turf wore a decidedly grungy look for the first show of the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter-Festive 2010,on Thursday evening. The LFW’s first offsite show,Sounds of Mumbai by Narendra Kumar, was a definite hit,as the runway was made to look like train tracks, and the models clung to handrails at the back of the ramp. Nari even made an appearance wearing the white topi of the Marathi Manoos, and served drinks out of a rustic tea kettle, while fashion students from INIFD dressed as coolies showed guests to their places.

While the theatrics warmed up the guests, the clothes quickly cooled us down as design after predictable design drifted down the runway. There were sport dresses in beige, coral, marigold and okra, with the only real moment of edginess coming when two particularly low-cut gowns almost had a nip-slip. Yawn. For a collection that was supposed to be a tribute to Mumbai,we expected something more spirited and innovative. We’ve seen Nari do so much better. And can we please have one Mumbai tribute, where Mumbai Meri Jaan doesn’t play in the background? This city needs a new soundtrack.

But the after-party more than made up for it in verve. The venue was taken over by revellers,as the guests who had decided to give the fashion show a miss turned up in droves for the cocktail and canapés. Host Bharat Oberoi welcomed Yash Birla,Prerna Goel,Sabina and Anil Chopra and Arun Nayyar. Also spotted were Sangeeta Bijlani and the latest Bollywood It-girl,Sonakshi Sinha, who’s revelling in her post-Dabangg spotlight. Maybe we’ll see her walk the runway once more this season.
