A 60-year-old ex-serviceman from Manimajra died after being hit by a car and lying injured on the road with no police help reaching on time.

Jagat Singh was hit by an unidentified vehicle at the Mansa Devi T-point around noon when he was walking back home from Panchkula. One Shoorvir Singh,an employee of Pallavi Hotel, who had come to the hotel for some work, was on his way back to Manimajra with his daughter when he saw the victim lying in a pool of blood. He rushed to the victim and called up the police control room twice. According to him,Jagat had been hit by two vehicles by the time he reached him. “As soon as I reached the victim,I called up the police control room twice, but nobody answered them. I tried for about 10 minutes to get help, and finally,an autorickshaw driver stopped and together we brought him to the hospital,” said Shoorvir.

It was finally one Captain Piyush who managed to get through to the police control room around 12.05 pm. The police said they immediately flashed the message to PCR van 5,but it failed to reach on time, said Shoorvir.

Meanwhile, the victim was admitted in the hospital at 12.35 pm,according to hospital records, and “was gasping for breath.” Doctors who attended to him in the emergency ward said he succumbed to injuries after a few minutes.

Shoorvir, who was there in the hospital till 1.45 pm,said neither any PCR van nor any policeman came to the hospital to inquire about the matter. “I was called to the Sector 7 police post around 4.30 pm where they asked me to give details of the accident,” he added. The victim was an ex serviceman and had served 7,Garhwal Rifles. He is survived by his wife and a son.

While Superintendent of Police Maneesh Choudhary was unavailable for comments, the control room was also not forthcoming with any information. “We did receive a call and sent the communication forward. No PCR reverted about the matter. It is not our job to keep track of the PCRs. We are on ‘VIP’ duty,so please excuse us,” said a policeman who refused to identify himself.
