Neighbours told police that Harjit would often assault his wife over petty issues.

Avtar Singh, Jaswinder Kaur’ brother, said he came to know about the incident on Thursday morning and rushed to the spot and found his sister and nephew lying with multiple wounds on their heads and faces. He alleged that villagers did not even take them to hospital.

“The locals did not even give him a cloth to cover their wounds and no one came forward to help him by arranging a vehicle. We then alerted the police and rushed both of them to a nearby hospital,” he said, adding that even earlier also, Harjit used to harass and assault Jaswinder and after the family’s intervention, he would promise not to repeat it but he would be back at it after some days.

Sub-inspector Bhinder Singh, SHO of Samrala police station said that as per villagers, Harjit escaped with his son  Manjot and is yet to be arrested. An FIR under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) of IPC has been registered.
