One dead, five rescued as textile unit collapses in Ludhiana

A worker died, five were rescued while the search under the debris is still on for one missing worker, after a part of a textile dyeing factory collapsed in the Focal Point area of Ludhiana Saturday late, officials said.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams pulled out the workers from under the debris in an overnight operation.
Inspector Amandeep Singh Brar, SHO Focal Point police station, said that one worker has died, one Bunty is missing and five others admitted to hospital. All five are stable.
“The construction work was ongoing at the factory and the beams were being installed when a portion came down. An FIR has been registered against the contractor,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal said the rescue operation was still underway to see if anyone else still trapped under the debris.
The incident occurred at the Kohli Dyeing Factory in Phase-8 of Focal Point area. According to eyewitnesses, a loud sound was heard before the building caved in. It has been learnt that a boiler was installed in the unit.
DC Jorwal said, “As per the owner of the building, 29 workers had logged in at the unit in the morning. However, when the building collapsed, seven were inside and trapped under the debris. One worker was taken out immediately while operation was launched to search and rescue the others”.
Two teams of NDRF apart from police personnel, fire brigade, a team from the municipal corporation were carrying out the rescue operation, Jorwal said, adding a medical team led by civil surgeon is stationed at the spot.
Meanwhile Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has issued directions to the administration to assess the situation.
“Rescue teams have started their operations. I pray for the swift and safe rescue of the workers trapped under the debris and for their speedy recovery,” he said in a post on X.
