<i>Bollywood’s most talked-about couple on working together in Kurbaan</i>

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are back after a long promotional tour of Kurbaan in London and Dubai. However, when we meet Bollywood’s It-couple,they don’t show any signs of exhaustion. Oozing charm, they walk in together—both in denims and a tee. Epitomizing casual chic,Khan sports a red bandana and Kapoor looks radiant, even without make up.

While everybody’s wondering if the chemistry of this off-screen couple will spell magic at the box office, they are confident of it. “The chemistry lies in the script and dialogue. This movie is not a candyfloss romance,it’s very intense and real,” says the actress. Khan agrees that the chemistry lies between the lead characters of Kurbaan—Ehsaan and Avantika. “I guess the chemistry of real life couples normally doesn’t work on screen because people have very high expectations. While expectations are high here too, this film is very different,” he reasons. During the conversation, the actors call for beverages of their choice—coffee for Khan and just like the promo of Kurbaan,Kapoor sticks to water.

Before Kurbaan, the actors have worked together in LoC in 2003 and then in Tashan (2008),though they weren’t paired opposite each other. Both have lots to talk about each other as actors and professionals. “Saif has changed a lot since LoC. He’s an actor who reinvents himself with every movie. He’s one of the finest actors in our industry and it was a great learning experience to work with him,” said the charming Kapoor. Khan returns the compliment by calling the actress “extremely professional”. “The best part about working with Kareena is that she gets ready really fast. Most of the times,I’d be in the dressing room longer than her,” he laughs.

It’s Karan Johar who brought the real-life couple together on screen for the first time since cupid struck. “I didn’t sign the film because Kareena was in it. Both of us are actors by profession. We were offered the film by Karan and signed it because the script was great,” Khan clarifies. Kareena too cites the script as the reason for signing the film, which releases onNovember 20. After Dev,Omkara and Jab We Met,the 29-year-old has once again opted for the de-glam look for this performance-oriented role. “Kurbaan’s a nice change from the commercial films where all I have to do is look glamorous,” says Kapoor. The film—written and directed by Rensil D’Silva—deals with terrorism in the backdrop of New York. Both the lead characters land in the US with dreams. A series of harrowing experiences have them turn to terrorism—giving the film a dark tone.

Didn’t the fact that the film might glorify a serious issue like terrorism bother them? “I do play a terrorist but the film does not glorify terrorism. It does the opposite actually. I did think a lot when the script was narrated to me. Finally,I decided to do it for I was confident that Rensil will handle the issue well,” explains the 39-year old actor.

After Kurbaan, the lovers will be seen together next in Illuminati Film’s Agent Vinod. In fact,Khan wants to concentrate only on Agent Vinod, his home production, after their November release, unlike the Kapoor girl, whose hands are full. Her first film opposite Aamir Khan,3 Idiots,is set to release on December 25,while shooting for Stepmom’s adaptation and Ra1 are underway.

At present, however, all that the couple wishes for is the success of its togetherness at the box office.
