It’S that time of the year again when the Inter-National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) is abuzz with energy, creativity and lots of action. With their annual fashion showcase round the corner, the students of fashion design are hard at work and busy giving finishing touches to their creations. Seeking inspirations from around the world — be it Jomon Doki, the ancient Japanese art of pottery,to Web trap,a theme inspired by the world of spiders — 85 students have put together a bouquet of 20 collections to be presented at a fashion show titled,‘INIFD Designer Medley 2010’,later this month. The students offered a sneak peek at a mini-show held on campus on Monday. Among the collections that caught our attention was ‘F Cube’. Inspired by the twists and turns of the grapevine, resplendent cockscomb and roses, the collection put forth fluid ensembles with mostly Western silhouettes in colours of the fruit and bloom. The student designers Sukhdeep Kaur,Shikha Sharma,Jagjeet Sandu and Swati Chauhan, impressed with the paisley motifs done on the ensembles in traditional dori marori techniques. Inspired by the art of grafitti,Harleen Kaur presented a line-up of sporty garments in pop colours like yellow, orange, neon, red etc. Kaur even matched her accessories like shoes and handmade bags that added to the collection’s appeal. The other collection that was a riot of colour was ‘Odhni’,which was designed by a group of students, who presented traditional Kutch embroideries on A-line dresses and kalidaar kurtis. When it came to contemporary styles, design students Rohit Rai and Priyanka Sharma chose punk styles and tattoos as the theme for their collection ‘Stumblebum’. Using techniques like laser cutting and burnout effects, the designers put forth a collection in mostly bold blacks and accentuated it all with shades of bright pink, yellow and green. Here’s looking forward to the final showcase.
