Flower shows,exhibitions and competitions are round the corner. The aspirants should get ready with their exhibits and gardens. Those who win garden competitions have tougher job at hand as the judges see many aspects and every aspect should spell perfection. Whether it is the flower quality,lawn,health of the plants or designing and planning for planting. Everything has to be meticulously planned. Not many days are left,so this is last call for getting spruced up. The rain Gods have been kind and you may call these showers as golden showers. The rainwater not only gives new lease of life to your lawn but also washes the plants of all dust and dirt. Do not hesitate to participate,who knows your garden may catch the judges attention. Best of luck!
* Do the judges include backyard garden in the garden area in a house? What if we do not want to show them that area?

In fact,the whole of the home garden whether front lawn area or the backyard garden,are included in the home garden area. But if you do not want to show it to judges,its up to you. But general consideration is that if you have decorated the front garden area then you must have planned your backyard garden too.
* What if we wash our plants just before the judges come to visit to evaluate our garden? Does it make a wrong impression?

You are welcome to wash your plants in the morning and if judges happen to visit your garden at that time,it will not make any wrong impression but in fact the plants will look fresh. Only consideration is that you do not create water pools on the floor or wet mud to make the movement of judges difficult. Their eyes should get an opportunity to see around rather than down for precautionary movement.

* I want to participate in the flower show this season. Please tell me the procedure

You have not mentioned in which category you want to participate,whether in cut flower section,potted plants,flower arrangement or garden competition. However,for any participation,you must approach the organizers who will give you tickets in parts to be retained by organizers,to be secured with your exhibits and a counterfoil for your proof of participation. Do not right your name etc on the part of the ticket to be attached with the exhibits. You may be disqualified.
* The cucurbits that I had planted a few days back in poly-bags have sprouted. Any precautions?

Make sure they get enough early morning sun. Keep a watch for eaten leaves. They indicate red pumpkin beetle attack at this stage. In that case,spray sevin,dissolved at two and a half gram to a litre of water.
