The number of children who have died in New Delhi and Lahore because of dirty water is more than the number of persons who have died in conflicts between India and Pakistan in the last 60 years, said Dr Anil Najam,Vice-Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).
Dr Najam was in the city on Thursday to deliver a special lecture at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID). Talking about Climate change and development of South-East Asia,Dr Najam said there was a need to reframe the issue of climate.
Dr Nijam,considered one of the leading authority on international environment and development policy, said every issue of development was linked with climate change. Next July will be the hottest, he remarked.
If we look at the earth from space,we will realize our world as a planet,is a third world country. It does seem poor,divided,degraded,insecure,poorly governed and unsafe,but we need to understand this larger perspective, he said.
He also talked about South Asias challenges in the age of development and emphasized that the countries need to deal with the climate issues together.
While talking about the nature of globalness in the globalised world,he said,Around 4,26,000 cell phones retire every year in United States and these cell phones are then sent to different countries. This is how the global train moves.
According to Dr Nijam climate change is inevitable and imminent. Human impact in South Asia will be severe and the countries need to deal with it together.
The lecture was attended by experts,officials from the Punjab government and faculty members from Panjab University and other colleges.
