A loving wife, funny father-in-law,a tucked away naughty mistress,a meddling sidekick, couple of oddballs,Govinda and a riot of laughter – yes,you simply cannot miss director David Dhawan’s signature style. For 20 years, the man’s been dishing out one comedy after another, and given a chance,he’ll do exactly the same for the next 20. “Well, the formula is same,it’s the presentation that varies,” David connects via Mumbai. All set for his next release,Big Pictures and Vashu Bhagnani production Do Knot Disturb with his all-time lucky star Govinda along with Riteish Deshmukh,Lara Dutta,Sohail Khan,Ranvir Shorey and Rajpal Yadav,Dhawan says it’s a complete entertainer. Just like the rest? “Yes,but you know, comedy is a very serious business….it takes a lot of hardwork, and when you’re at it for 20 years, you practically end up mastering the art,” tells Dhawan, who’s up at 5 in the morning, his head buzzing with ideas for they have to look and sound plausible before he goes on floors with it. “I churn out exactly what my fans keep nudging me for,and it takes time, conviction, research, and sense of humour,” he smile. For instance,in Do Knot Disturb,Nadeem and Shravan slog it out for ‘Mere Naal’ song of David Dhawan’s upcoming comic flick Do Knot Disturb,David was adamant on one particular tune and several drafts made by Nadeem-Shravan were rejected till,“our team of music arrangers flew down to a village in Chandigarh and recorded live dhol beats! I was convinced that I wanted a real dhol sound for this song because the other instruments are very synthetic.”

It took a disastrous string of flops before Dhawan gave a blockbuster hit in Shola Aur Shabnam, following which rolled out a lot of No. 1’s,voyeuristic husbands,extra-marital affairs, rip offs of south Indian and Hollywood films, and not to miss – a fantastic jodi number one in Karisma and Govinda. Heck, the man managed to give hunks like Salman and Sanjay Dutt a funny bone to chew on! Quiz him what makes him pick such cheesy subjects, especially those relating to pati, patni aur woh,and David laughs – “it takes a very emotional, cued in director to make films the way we do….you need to know the pulse of the audience, the regular tea-time talk, the one thing that’s universal, and very real. And remember,it’s not laughs all the way…these are serious matters dealt with lightly, and seasoned with a message. All my characters are related to each other, enjoy some kind of bonding on screen, not individual and scattered,” says the man who is all set to launch his two sons,Rohit as director, and Varun into world of acting. “Yes,and I’m pretty excited about it,” says the proud dad who is quick to add – “but they’re not getting any help from me. Why give them a silver spoon…let them rough it out like their dad did!” According to reports,Rohit is making his directorial debut with “Come on Pappu”,and it’s quite similar to Hollywood flick “Dunston Checks In”. That said,Dhawan himself has been facing controversies like Partner was like Hitch, and his latest,Hook Ya Crook resembles Adam Sandlar’s The Longest Yard! Of course the director refutes allegations, and gets on with his non comic ‘re-inventions’!

Meanwhile, quiz him about judging Hans Baliye, and he says he came on board only because of Karisma. “I have a long association with her,and she’s a real star material….I can never find a replacement for her or Govinda,” says the king of comedies, all set to deliver yet again with Do Knot Disturb.
