As the residents of Kharar spent the entire day without electricity, the night ahead also seemed dark as power supply, which was suspended at 10 am on Monday, had not been restored till the filing of this report. Daylong unscheduled power cuts, which have become a norm here, have thrown normal life out of gear. On Saturday also,Kharar had to go without power and water supply for eight hours.
Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Punjab State Electricity Board (Kharar) Satwant Singh attributed the power crisis to the ongoing work of shifting electricity poles from the way of the National Highway-21,which was being four-laned,in Kharar.
We have been given a very short time by the state government to remove all the electricity poles coming in way of the four-laning project, following which we are working day and night, he explained. But Singh fell short of words when asked why the public was not notified in advance for such planned work.
The residents, meanwhile, are fuming. Why dont they ever plan ahead to save the public from harassment. Today,I had to buy packaged water to fulfil my daily needs, said Sonia,a housewife.
Citizens Welfare Council Chairman Dr P K Jain said the PSEB has not only delayed the ongoing four-laning work of NH-21 but their callous attitude also poses a great danger to commuters as the overhead electricity poles and wires are standing without proper support now. He also urged the PSEB chairman to intervene immediately and improve the functioning of PSEB in Kharar.
