The two major groups of teachers of Panjab University (PU) announced their poll candidates,on Thursday,ahead of the forthcoming coming Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) elections scheduled for August 22.
The group led by the current PUTA president,Mohammed Khalid,Associate Professor,Department of Evening Studies has announced his name as the presidential candidate. Professor V K Walia,Department of Zoology has been declared as candidate for vice-president with Jayanti Dutta,from Academic Staff College as the secretary,while Kitty Siddhu from Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital has been named for treasurer. Dr Ram Mehar,from University School Of Open Learning (USOL) is the candidate for joint secretary.
Another group led by Dr Devinder Singh,Department of Law,has announced his name as the presidential candidate.
The office-bearers of the group include Dr Ashok Kumar,Department of Hindi for the post of vice-president,Parveen Goyal,University Institute of Engineering and Technology(UIET) as the secretary,Harveen Kaur,Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences as the joint secretary and Dr Jivesh Bansal,from AC Joshi Library as treasurer.
While both groups claimed they would work towards scrapping the UGC Academic Performance Indicators (API) based system more aggressively than earlier,it was the appointment of more lecturers in the university that formed the main agenda for both.
Panel members led by Khalid Mohammad said,Recruitment of faculty in various departments will be our utmost priority.
Meanwhile,Dr Singh said,There must be young and dynamic faculty on the campus.
The last date of filing nominations is August 9.
