There are 1.7 million NGOs registered in India but not all of them are doing quality work. “To add to this, there is a complete lack of visibility, responsibility and accountability, and people are losing their faith in NGOs,” says Meenu Chopra, director iCongo — Indian Confederation of NGOs— who is trying to bridge this gap and give NGOs the space and visibility they deserve.

iCongo,a cooperative hub,is approaching the problem with a two-pronged strategy. “We are first identifying NGOs across the country and registering them as members. The next step is to make them accountable, responsible and self-sustainable via campaigns and projects,” says Chopra. The second strategy is to involve citizens. “We are giving citizens an opportunity to be a part of this social sector while sitting at your office. You don’t have to go out there, you just have to surf through the projects and programmes, attach yourself to any cause you deeply feel for and be a part of the change,” she tells us.

To make NGOs self sustainable, icongo has developed a whole new platform — congoshongo.com. “It’s a myth that NGOs produce no or low quality products. They have the best artisans, the highest quality of work coming out of their dens, their only bane being lack of marketing. This is where congoshongo steps in.” Based on the e-retail model, congoshongo creates progressive market supply chains to promote products made by NGOs. “It’s India’s first online shop that enables consumers to buy products from NGOs online. The idea is to empower marginalised communities and provide them with an easy way to showcase their merchandise and issues,by creating marketing channels for the produce made by communities. This would also be an interface with the consumer and serve for creating long term self sustainability through social entrepreneurship,” adds Chopra.

The website not only provides global access but promotes shop for a cause model. While more and more NGOs are signing up,iCongo’s also tied up with restaurants for ‘Restaurants Against Hunger’ and have begun the anti hunger project with Olive’s AD Singh. “This ensures hygienic midday meal to a lot of people”. Not only this, log onto http://www.icozflix,also promoted by iCongo, that intends to promote meaningful movies that sensitise the public to social issues. “We are also working on iseechange.com,a one-stop-shop associated with the social sector. The website will have a list of causes and you can choose to be part of any one via donations, work, volunteering or writing in. From working on social causes like child rights and education to community welfare, environment, wildlife and animal rights to working for HIV-positive people, cancer patients, and the physically challenged, our focus is on grassroot and small NGOs to make every wrong right,” Chopra signs off.
