Complete with online references, checks and free logins, job portals on the internet are more popular than ever

There’s been a paradigm shift in both the job seekers and employers’ perspective. The former prefer trying out numerous ways to make their presence felt in the job market while employers too don’t enervate their time and resources in shuffling CVs. “They prefer to hire people online with most companies exploring the online job portals. Though conventional job consultants are still in business, online job portals have become a handy tool for recruiters in zeroing in on the right candidates. The options are more and it is easier to eliminate,” says Deepak Kaistha, director and managing partner,Planman HR Pvt,an HR consulting firm. At least 50 to 60 per cent of the hiring happens through online job portals,he adds.

The popularity of such portals is largely due to the wide reach of the internet, the economics and the anonymity you can maintain and the fact that one can view innumerable jobs at a click without being physically present. “Besides, with jobs in fields like pharma,IT,manufacturing, engineering and FMCGs and full-time,part-time and freelance jobs, all available at one place, there’s not much left to aspire,” Kaistha points out. The entire profile of the candidate can be uploaded here, the recruiter can extract the information he/she wants but the biggest challenge remains verifying the authenticity of the profile. “Background screening assures that frauds are minimised,” says Wayne Tollemache, executive managing director,Asia Pacific,First Advantage Pvt Ltd,who says that the tool is being used to screen new hires and existing staff. “Business leaders are now seeking online solutions as an answer to the current challenges related to delays, costs and authenticity of data,” he says. The increasing incidents of reported involvement of employees in internal/external frauds and collusion in data security infringement have lead to greater recognition of the need for background screening. “The integrated database of our company,VerifyDirect already has employment records, education records and credit data of over half a million people and already has 50 partners,” he says.

Of utmost importance are good references,“For that certifies you as a worthy employee,” says Kunal Kishore, director of Value 360 Communication Pvt. Ltd,a PR Agency. With attrition rates on a rise,it assures that you are an employee worth investing in. Yogesh Bansal, founder and CEO,ApnaCircle.com,a business and career networking website, too agrees,“While, online job portals are witnessing a sea change, you must have all the documents and references in place. References work a great deal in a professional’s profile.”
