Jawan sentenced to 5 years’ RI, dismissed from service over spying for Pakistani operatives

The jawan, who held the rank of Naik, originally belonged to 22 Rajputana Rifles. He was found to be informing Pakistani agents about the movement of Army units, besides other charges.

An Army jawan has been sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) and dismissed from service by a General Court Martial in Delhi Cantonment on charges of spying for Pakistani intelligence operatives.

The jawan, who held the rank of Naik, was posted with the Rajputana Rifles Regimental Centre and originally belonged to 22 Rajputana Rifles. He is learnt to have pleaded guilty to several charges levelled against him for passing confidential information to Pakistani intelligence operatives, contrary to the provisions of the Official Secrets Act, 1923.

The jawan was found to be informing Pakistani agents about the movement of Army units across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan. He was also found to be passing on information regarding the movement of Army units for exercises, the turnover of regiments and battalions in various formations, besides photographs.

He was found to have compiled a list of names of General Officers Commanding of various formations and Order of Battle (ORBAT) of several formations, including the Western Command. There messages were also found where he had demanded cash from the Pakistani intelligence operatives.

The first charge against the jawan was under section 69 of the Army Act, wherein between February 2019 and April 2020 he was accused of having communicated through WhatsApp messages from his mobile phone number to the mobile number of certain unknown people, military information which might be directly or indirectly useful to an enemy.

The second charge under the same section accused him of making notes of military information which might be directly or indirectly useful to the enemy. As per the third charge under section 63 of the Army Act, he was accused of having been found in possession of two rubber stamps of General Staff Officer Grade 1, HQs 15 Corps in Srinagar. Also, one Montessori school stamp and one stamp of the principal of the city Montessori school were found in his possession.

The fourth charge under section 69 of the Act accused the jawan of having inappropriately indulged in chain marketing business with ‘Bein Waves’ and ‘One World’ Company, contrary to Army regulations.
