With only a day left to file nominations, colleges continue to be dormant this election season. Even colleges like Sector-10 DAV College and SD College, otherwise famous for frantic enthusiasm, are missing in action with not even panels complete as yet.
While parties like SOPU and PUSU are slugging it out on the Panjab University campus, colleges in the city are not ready even with their presidential hopefuls. Finding a student with a minimum 75 per cent attendance is proving to be an uphill task for most of the parties.
A studious person will not contest elections and those who are willing to,do not meet the attendance criteria. It is a double whammy for us, said Simarjit Singh,a PUSU supporter at the SGGS Khalsa College. They also seem to be averse to the idea of nominating a girl for the post. If we field a girl,we would lose out on the number of votes as they are considered weak. The party has to think about its image as well. We do not want the opposition to banter us, a SOI supporter at SD College expressed.
Inter-party differences too are proving to be a deterrent for parties to come up with a unanimous choice. With time running out and no one willing to bury their differences, for some, the battle looks lost even before the polling. No one seems to agree on a particular contestant.
With limited time and no decision about the panel, contesting elections would be just a formality, said Nitin Jandu,a student at DAV College.
Teachers too agree that there is a lack of enthusiasm among students this year for elections. Continuous rains too are have dampened the election spirit as students are keeping indoors and there is no campaigning on the campus.
Till last year,we were ready with final panel days before the polling. College is not buzzing with any activity till now, said Prof Ojha,Government College for Girls,Sector 10.
