Rising conflicts between new parents and grandparents over whether to nurture babies in a modern medicated way or a traditional way is negatively impacting the growth of the child. Doctors and psychologists in the city held an interactive session with parents, suggesting some tips for good parenting.
Daily we come across new mothers who are facing problems from elders at home, saying things like she is not lactating properly,or that she does not know how to take care of a child. The clash of mindsets of the young and old starts right from the childs delivery, says gynaecologist Dr Umesh N Jindal, director of Jindal IVF and Sant Memorial Nursing Home.
The tradition of giving gutki (sweets given to the newborn) is unhygienic for the newly born and also leads to delay in the early breast feeding of the child for hours. Where young parents avoid it,the elderly stress on it, adds Jindal.
The best way to deal with this problem is to talk it out, listen to the children and visit an expert if early signs of physical or behavioural problems are seen so that intervention starts as soon as possible, said Dr Ruby Ahuja,a clinical psychologist.
