Installation of escalators at railway station to resume next week

Work for the installation of escalators at the Chandigarh railway station will start again from the next week. The same was stopped after the company which was given the contract refused to undertake the construction and moved court. The work for installing the escalators was started in January this year.

Now,with the name of the company which will install the escalators short-listed,work for the installation will start in a week’s time. “We have short-listed the company and work will start soon. The company which was given the contract earlier left the work in between. Their security money has been realised and we will very soon allot the work to an another company,” said A K Kathpal,the new DRM,Ambala division.

The escalators,for which work started at platforms 2 and 3 at the beginning of the year,will take passengers from platforms directly towards the two entrances to the station from Chandigarh and Panchkula side. This will reduce the rush at platform number 1. At present,the stairs lead all passengers to platform number 1.

The escalators arrived at the station a few months ago and are awaiting installation. The foot overbridge that is under construction will be extended on both sides of the station. It would reduce the pressure on other platforms as the passengers who arrive at platforms other than 1 or 5 can exit without crossing it.
