Inquiry report on illegal cables presented in House meet

The inquiry conducted into the laying of cables illegally in the city has failed to fix responsibility on any official.

The inquiry conducted into the laying of cables illegally in the city has failed to fix responsibility on any official. Initiated in May this year, the inquiry apart from recording statements of all concerned, has not recommended any action. The issue of cables being laid illegally without taking permission from the Municipal Corporation (MC) came to light after a raid by UT Vigilance Department. Thereafter the councillors expressed concern at the unenthusiastic attitude being adopted by the officials. It was stated that this raised security issues as anyone could come to the city, start digging and lay cables.

Following this it was decided that an inquiry would be conducted into the issue and it was handed over to Additional Commissioner Sunil Bhatia.

The cables were being laid by Digi Cables and Fastway Transmission Private Limited. The representatives of the companies have given their statements justifying their action. The report is however silent on any recommended action against these companies. During the course of the inquiry when the sites was dug it was found that apart from these two companies, cables were also laid by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. The statements of the representatives of these companies were recorded.

The inquiry report was presented in the meeting of the House on Friday. Councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma said that the scope of inquiry has not been touched upon and the report revealed nothing. Councillor Pardeep Chhabra and Dr A P Sanwaria pointed out that it was a fraud.

Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh said that the inquiry will be conducted again by the Vigilance Officer of the Municipal Corporation.
