An 18-month-old baby was among the three persons mowed down by a recklessly driven truck on Chandigarh-Ropar National Highway-21 near old bus stand this afternoon.

Gurpreet Kaur, daughter of Rajinder Singh,a resident of Mundi Kharar village in Kharar,Varan Ram,a migrant putting up in Ropar and Jai Kishen Verma,a rickshaw-puller from Khanpur Brahma village in Ambala, were declared dead on arrival at the Ropar Civil Hospital. Injured Rajinder and his wife Kulwinder Kaur are struggling for their lives at the hospital.

Preliminary police investigations hinted that the truck driver, who managed to flee the spot, was drunk,as truck cleaner Jagpal Singh, who was overpowered by some people before being handed over to the police, was found to be in an inebriated state.

The accident took place around 1.15 pm,when the speeding mini-truck coming from the Chandigarh side went out of control near Hotel Vikrant and first ran over a rickshaw pulled by Varan Ram,then hit a sugarcane juice vend on the roadside before hitting Kulwinder Kaur,Rajinder Singh and Jai Kishen Verma, who were moving on foot.

On being hit by the truck,Kulwinder lost grip on Gurpreet, who fell from her lap on the road. While the Kharar couple was going to meet Kulwinder’s parents at Fatehpur village near Ropar,Ram had come to meet his relatives at Ropar.

The truck also damaged a scooter of a traffic cop parked on the roadside. The accident disrupted the traffic on the busy highway. The police have booked the truck driver for causing deaths and injuries by rash and negligent driving.
