Professor Sat Parkash Bansal, Vice Chancellor (VC), Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, suggested that Indian Knowledge System (IKS) — a component in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 — should be called Bhartiya Knowledge System, amid the calls in the country to rechristen India as Bharat.

He also advised that “Jyotish”, “Bhartiya Ganit”, “Karma-Kand” etc should be introduced in value-added, skilled development and multidisciplinary courses under NEP 2020. Bansal was speaking on the IKS and Indian languages, which was one of the subjects out of the 10 discussed thoroughly on the last day of two-days conference of Northern Zone Vice Chancellors over implementation of NEP 2020.

“IKS must be replaced with Bhartiya Knowledge System. Centres in the name of “rishi munis” and religious sects under IKS should be established in higher education institutes (HEIs) to practise their teachings,” the VC of HPC said.

The Northern Zone consists of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, Pro Vice Chancellor, Central University Haryana, Professor Sushma Yadav presented her candid view on the need of strictly adopting and adhering to the ethics in the education system by teachers. “We are lacking somewhere on the issue of ethics. Teachers should always have in their minds that if they do not teach properly, they are not following the ethics. If we want to improve our education system, first we have to set up our ethics and next strictly follow these,” Yadav said while making her address on equitable and inclusive education under NEP 2020.

Eight other subjects on which detailed discussion took place included multidisciplinary and holistic education, digital and online education; skill development and employability; research, innovation and entrepreneurship; capacity building of teachers for quality education; governance and autonomy; accreditation; and excellence and internationalisation.
