The character of the quick witted canteen boy that he played in 3 Idiots comes closest to his personality — chirpy, intelligent, with a devil-may-care attitude. “I loved playing the role of Millimeter in the movie, and I love the fact that people still address me by that name,” smiles 16-year-old Rahul Kumar who was in town to perform in Baghi Samrat,a play by Literacy India,an NGO working for the empowerment of women and underprivileged children.

“Earlier,I had acted as Saif Ali Khan’s son in Omkara and as Tikku,a village boy in The Blue Umbrella. I went for a random audition in Delhi, without knowing that the film was directed by Rajkumar Hirani or that Aamir Khan will be the lead actor. They liked my look and next thing I know,I was at the sets in my character,” says Kumar. To begin with,Kumar was pretty nervous whether the film will work or not. “I kept asking whether it will be a hit and folks on the sets said when you have Hirani and Aamir,it’s already a hit,” says Kumar, who wants to pursue a career in acting.

Not surprisingly, working with Aamir Khan has been an experience worth cherishing for Kumar. No one is as humble and intelligent as Aamir,he says. “I was the youngest in the 3 Idiots unit, and Aamir has been a great teacher. He had an answer and solution for almost anything.”

Kumar interestingly is like the characters he plays — from humble backgrounds, they struggle to come up in life and realise their dreams. Kumar and his elder brother have been associated with Literacy India for ten years now. “They have been sponsoring my education, and I’ve been doing a lot of acting and theatre with them,” says Kumar. After 3 Idiots,Vidhu Vinod Chopra has also stepped forward to sponsor Kumar’s education, who he currently a student of Class X at Rotary International School,Gurgaon. “I do keep getting work, but I don’t want my studies to be affected,” he signs off.
