Seven persons,including women and children,were killed in an accident between a Haryana Roadways bus and a car near the Naggal police station on the Ambala-Hissar National Highway on Sunday. The deceased include two siblings,their wives and three children. The collision was so intense that all the passengers in the car died on the spot. The bodies were taken to the civil hospital for postmortem. The deceased were identified as Naresh (34) his wife Suman (32) their two children Shereya (3) and Abhinav (6) and Jai Dev (30) his wife Poonam (28) their son Arunav (1). Superintendent of Police Bharati Arora along with DSP Rameshwar Sharma and police force reached the spot.

Mass marriages of poor girls solemnised
Dasmesh Welfare Charitable Trust,Roopnagar,solemnised mass marriages of 10 poor girls at Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh at Solkhian near Ropar on Sunday. Member Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu was the chief guest at the function. He lauded the efforts to organise the event.

Senior citizens celebrate women’s day
The women wing of Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association,Manimajra celebrated International Women Day with former governor of Haryana,Dhanak Lal Mandal as the chief guest. Speaking at a symposium on women empowerment organised on the occasion,Dr Manjit Kaur,Dr Shashi Kaushal,Prof Uma Joshi and Geeta Tandon spoke on issues pertaining to women on various aspects in the domain of social,political,administrative and cultural field. Principal Madhu Suri presided over the function and emphasised the importance of women in a democratic set-up.

Anti-terrorist front holds demonstration
The Anti-Terrorist Front India held a demonstration againt Lashkar-e-Taiba to protest against threats to kill chief ministers of Haryana and Punjab. The demonstration was led by ATFI president Viresh Shandilya. They demonstrators gathered at Kalka Chowk in Ambala and burnt the effigy of the LET. He appealed to all parties to come to a common platform to fight against the terrorism potential danger to the unity of the country.

My Adorable Wife contest held at Chaitanya hospital
An event ‘My Adorable Wife’ was organised at Chaitanya Hospital on Sunday,to mark the International Women’s Day. Men were invited to speak about the achievements of their wives. Dr Anil Narang,Head of the Department,Neonatology,and Dr Poonam Kumar,Head of the Department,Obs and Gynae,judged the event. The judges decided not to choose one winner but gave token of appreciation to all the participants.

Residents’ welfare panel of Sector 20 constituted
The general body meeting of House Owners’ Welfare Society,Sector 20-A,elected Sarvashri Vasu Dev Gupta as its president. Harkirat Singh was elected as the vice-president and RL Soni was elected the general secretary of the society. BD Thakur is the joint secretary and Jatinder Johar is the new finance secretary.

‘Extensive expansion of public sector banks need of the hour’
Emphasising the need for extensive expansion of public sector banks in the country to achieve the national objective of financial inclusion,Harvinder Singh,General Secretary of Bank of India Officers’ Association today made out a case for rapid recruitment in the banking industry. Participating in the 21st annual general body meeting of the BOI Officers’ Association held here today,Harvinder said lack of staff would lead to violation of bank norms and adversely affect their functioning. Around 500 officers from Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh,Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh attended the meeting here on Sunday.

Association of retired bank officers holds meeting
Biennial elections and general body meeting of the Central Bank Retired Officers’ Association was held here on Sunday. The members discussed the problems faced by the retired officers and also expressed their concern over their long pending demands. Puran Kant was elected as the president of the association in the biennial elections for the fourth consecutive term unanimously. Speaking on the occasion,Kant said some important demands of the retired bank officers which required consideration by the banks management had already been taken up by the United Forum of Bank Retirees’ organisation.

Chief of schools’ association meets CBSE chairperson
H S Mamik,president of Independent Schools’ Association met CBSE chairperson Vineet Joshi to apprise him of the matter related to disaffiliation of Shivalik Public School. Mamik said the students of both Class IX and XI will take the exams as students of the school.DPI(S) Sunil Bhatia had said since the school had been disaffiliated,students of Class IX and Class XI students would take exams as part of government schools. Mamik further informed that the CBSE has asked for the school details of and the grounds on which it has been de-recognised by the UT Administration.

Surgeons’ meet ends at PGI
The concluding day of the northern chapter of ASI-2010 at PGIMER,Chandigarh,started with a master video session where three surgical procedures were presented by eminent surgeons from All India Institute of Medical Sciences,Delhi and Lakeshore Hospital,Cochin and Manipal Hospital,Mangolore.

Two-day repair and servicing mela of Military Engineering Service (MES),to give thrust to the maintenance activities at the residential quarters of Air Warriors at sectors 28,31 and 47 concluded here today. Organised by Chandigarh Air Force Station,the aim was to improve the living conditions and to give boost to the morale of personnel.

Cyclist hit by bus,injured
A cyclist,Roshan Samria,was badly injured after he was hit by a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking bus (CH O1 G1 7123) near the petrol pump in Sector 15. He was admitted to the PGI. The police have booked the driver of the bus who was identified as Nirmal Singh of Naraingarh Jhugian in Mohali for negligent and rash driving.
