Man gets 7 yrs in jail for raping minor
A resident of Baltana was given a seven year jail term in a rape case by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Ritu Garg on Saturday. Dilpreet Singh was accused of kidnapping a minor girl from her house and rape charges were also slapped against him later. The case dates back to December 5,2009,when the 14-year-old victim,a resident of Sector 12-A,went missing. In a complaint to the police,the girls father,Om Prakash,alleged that his daughter did not return home in the evening after attending computer classes at an institute in Sector 14. He claimed that Dilpreet had kidnapped his daughter. The accused had allegedly lured the girl and took her to various cities till she found her way back home. An FIR was lodged in the Sector-14 police station and a case under Sections 376,363 and 366 of the IPC was registered against Dilpreet.
Pedestrian crushed to deathvA resident of Maloya was crushed to death in a blind hit-and-run accident late on Friday night. The victim,40-year-old Supermoney,was on foot when an unidentified vehicle hit him and sped away. The mishap took place in Sector 51. The mutilated body of the deceased was found lying on the side of the road in the morning. He was later identified as Maloya resident Supermoney by his relative who came to the police station looking for him.
The police said the deceased worked as a labourer and was a heavy drunkard. He was going home when was hit by the car. There were no eyewitnesses to the accident. A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered in Sector 34 police station against unidentified accused.
5 injured as car rams truck
Five members of a Ludhiana family sustained serious injuries when a car,in which they were travelling,rammed a stationery truck on the Kharar-Ludhiana National Highway-95 near Mamoopur village,close to Kharar,late this evening. The injured have been identified as Madan Lal Sagar (35),Rani Sagar (26),Merry (5),Dolly (6) and Sunny (27). They were immediately rushed to Kharar Civil Hospital from where they were shifted to Chandigarh PGIMER in a critical condition. The accident took place when the car driver failed to notice a truck parked on the road side and rammed it from the rear. The police were,however,unaware of the accident till the reports last came in.
Labourer dies of electrocution
Sikander Rao,a labourer with a construction contractor building flats near Sunny Enclave in Desumajra here,was electrocuted to death in his hutment this evening. According to information,the victim was rectifying an electric fault during the power shutdown but as he was holding the naked wire in his hands,the electricity supply was restored,following which he was electrocuted. He was rushed to a local hospital,where he was declared dead on arrival. The local police have begun investigations.
Inebriated cop holds up traffic,shunted out
A police constable Harmanpreet Singh,posted at police check-post on National Highway-21 at Khanpur T-point here this evening created a scene when he stood on the middle of the highway and started stopping each and every vehicle passing through and demanded money from the commuters. The cop,who was believed to be in an inebriated condition,continued to hold the vehicular traffic on the busy highway till some of the harassed commuters called up the local police,which immediately reached the spot and pulled away the cop from the middle of the highway to restore the movement of traffic. On being stopped from his dereliction of duty,the cop also misbehaved with his colleagues but later he was taken to Civil Hospital for medical examination to establish his inebriated state. Meanwhile,he was shunted out to Mohali Police Lines under pending inquiry.
Tavern employee refuses to serve food,gets assaulted
A 19-year old employee of liquor vend-cum-tavern in Sector 28 was attacked with a slaughter knife in the tavern on Friday night. The employee,Monu Kumar,received grave injuries on his neck,elbow and back and admitted in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH)-32. The police have booked two unidentified youths in this regard. According to the 13-year old eyewitness,Bhagwant Rawat,the two youths had entered the tavern as the shutter was slightly open and started demanding food. When Monu refused,one of them attacked him with iron dustbin but he managed to save himself. Another youth then took out a slaughter knife and attacked Monu. The assailants fled from the spot and hunt for them is on.
Farmer robbed of over Rs 2 lakh
Farmer Jagir Singh,a resident of Brahmin Majra,was robbed of Rs 2.72 lakh at the old vegetable market in Naraingarh on Saturday. Singh had withdrawn the amount from two banks and was carrying it in a bag on a motorcycle. He stopped midway at the market to purchase vegetables when two youths on a bike snatched the bag and fled. The police have registered a case.
Fancy numbers sold for Rs 11.54 lakh
As many as 79 fancy registration numbers of a new series PB-65-L launched in Mohali were sold for Rs 11.54 lakh against the reserve price of Rs 2.18 lakh at an auction conducted by District Transport Officer here today. While PB-65-L-0001 fetched the maximum of Rs 3.25 lakh from Giani Sardara Singh Gill Foundation,0055 was sold for Rs 80,000 to the highest bidder Jaswinder Singh. Other numbers 0002 was sold for Rs 55,000 to Yogesh Gupta,0003 for Rs 13,000 to Ramjesh Jhaz,0004 for Rs 20,000 to Jaspal Singh,0005 for Rs 32,000 to Harman Preet Singh Prince,0006 for Rs 33,000 to Yogesh Gupta,0007 for Rs 22,000 to Mohan Lal Garg,0008 for Rs 22,000 to Arvind Baloni and 0009 for Rs 12,000 to Mohan Lal Garg. Canara Bank has opened its 3062nd branch and 162nd branch of Chandigarh circle in Industrial Area,Phase VII,here today. Two dead,one injured in road accident
A woman and her son died while her husband was injured seriously in a road accident on Saturday when the car in which they were travelling was hit by a truck near village Dhamoli on NH-73. The deceased Vijay Mahajan (36) and her son Rishav (12) died on the spot while Surinder Mahajan was rushed to Nariangarh hospital from where he was referred to the PGI. The police have a registered case against the erring truck driver.
Security of married couple extended
Acting on an appeal submitted by them,a local court today extended the security cover of a married couple till July 15. The girl,Rubina,a resident of Moradabad,had got married to Sunny,a resident of Budayun,Uttar Pradesh,a few months after having an affair of around two years with him. The girl then came to Panchkula and started residing in Sector 8 with the boy and his parents. The couple had submitted an appeal in the local court on July 3 and demanded security alleging that the family was against the inter-caste alliance.
Swindlers drive away new bike
Two swindlers drove away a brand new Yamaha motorcycle after taking the bike from the dealer for a test ride in Mohali,the police said here on Saturday. Janinder Singh of Sector 37,Chandigarh,who works as a manager with Mehar International Marketing Private Limited in Industrial Area,Phase III,here,reported to the police that last evening three youths came to their showroom and after promising to purchase a brand new Yamaha motorcycle,requested to take it for a trial run. While two of the youths took away the bike for trial run,one of their accomplices was left behind as a guarantee to return. However,when the two youths did not returned back after a long time,the third youth,who identified himself as Sukhwinder Singh of Shahimajra village here,also tried to leave the place on the pretext of bringing back his accomplices but he was instead handed over to the local police. On the complaint of Janinder Singh,the police have booked the three accused under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC and launched a hunt to trace the runaway two accused. During preliminary interrogation,Sukhwinder Singh told the police that the two youths were his tenants till recently and yesterday,they took him along on the pretext of buying a new bike.
