PU to launch vocational course for women
To mark the World Population Day,which is observed on July 11,the Department of Life Long Learning and Extension (DLLLE),Panjab University,will launch a three-month skill generation course in skin care and beauty therapy at anganwadi centre in village Khuda Lahora on Friday. Prof Ajaib Singh,Director,DLLLE inaugurated the event and highlighted the fact that the course was need-based and the demand was raised by village sarpanch Rakesh Kumar. Dr Prabha Vig,Assistant Professor from the department,highlighted that during the course the participants will enhance their personality. Rakesh Kumar,sarpanch of the village,said the course will help the women in becoming financially independent.
Panjab University professor to attend psychology conference
Professor Jitendra Mohan,Professor Emeritus of Psychology,Panjab University,Chandigarh,has been invited to present his research in the field of psychosocial aspects of Chandigarh at the 27th International Congress of Applied Psychology at Melbourne,Australia,from July 10 to 16. He worked on the project as national fellow of the Indian Council of Social Sciences and found strong links of heart diseases with stress,negative personal attitudes and emotions. Positive factors like optimism,social support,humour and gratitude help in coping with diseases in a better way. Genetics,family history,obesity and diabetes also play a crucial role. Professor Mohan,who is a member of the Board of directors of the International Association of Applied Psychology,will also be participating in the Council meeting to deliberate on the future activities of the association. More than 3,000 psychologists are expected to attend the meet.
Centralised counselling for engineering to begin today
The centralised counselling on the basis of AIEEE merit list for BTech and BArch courses in the six engineering and architecture colleges will start on Saturday at PEC University of Technology,Chandigarh. These colleges include PEC University of Technology,University Institute of Engineering and Technology,Panjab University,Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology,University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology,Swami Sarvanand Giri Panjab University Regional Centre and Chandigarh College of Architecture. Postmaster booked for criminal breach of trust
A postmaster was booked on the alleged charge of criminal breach of trust on Friday. On the complaint of Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Post Office,Jagdeep Gupta,the police have booked the accused,Ranveer Singh,under Section 409 of the IPC. No arrest has been made as yet. It was alleged that a resident of Machhli Kalan village,Narinder Singh,gave some money to the accused to deposit in his recurring account in 2008. But,Gupta never deposited it.
Two held with stolen jeep
The CIA wing of the district police has arrested two persons with a stolen Mahindra Bolero jeep,the police said on Friday. On a tip-off,the gang coming from Ropar side were intercepted near Daonmajra village,three km from here last evening. The arrested persons have been identified as Jobanjeet Singh alias Sona of Chohla Sahib and Anil Turia of Abohar. Two of their accomplices,identified as Kinka of Rahon and Jai of Mohali,managed to flee. The police said the accused were a part of an inter-state gang of vehicle-lifters,who used to sell stolen vehicles after putting fake registration numbers on them.
Kharar woman booked for forgery
A Kharar woman,Rajmeet Kaur alias Gurjeet Kaur,was booked on the alleged charges of forgery on Friday. On the complaint of the Regional Passport Officer,Chandigarh,the police have booked the accused under Sections 465 and 467 of the IPC. The accused,however,has not been arrested as yet. It was alleged in the complaint that the accused had tampered with her matriculation certificate submitted with passport application by writing Gurjeet Kaur instead of Rajmeet Kaur on it.
