Lawyer moves petition against Punjab chief minister,former governor
A city lawyer and chairperson of a human rights body has filed a petition in the court of District and Sessions Judge demanding the registration of a case against Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal,former Punjab Governor SF Rodrigues and Home-cum-Transport Secretary of UT. Advocate Arvind Thakur has alleged that the three had connived to allow the entry of 24 private AC buses having over 70 trips into Chandigarh in violation of the Sector 74 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966 and Section 100 (3) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. “The permission of entrance and plying of the private AC buses in Chandigarh is absolutely motivated as Badal is involved in this business,” the lawyer has written in his petition,which is slated for hearing tomorrow.

Rathore appeal: Defence continues arguments on third consecutive day
The in-camera proceedings over SPS Rathore’s appeal challenging his six-month sentence in Ruchika molestation case continued on the third consecutive day on Wednesday with the defence counsel for the former DGP of Haryana detailing minutely the points contained in the recorded evidences.
The CBI prosecution will start the arguments to demand a higher punishment up to maximum two years once the defence has finished with its arguments over what it claimed were the points in Rathore’s favour. On Wednesday,the hearing lasted for about four hours,with the defence now dwelling on the general arguments on the matter contained in the 97-page judgement. The trial continues tomorrow.

Give management of civic works to us,say former Panchkula councillors
PANCHKULA: In a press conference held at Red Bishop,around eight former councillors from Congress demanded that the supervision of civic amenities of wards should be handed over to them. The councillors also condemned the decision taken by the administration of involving residents’ welfare associations for developmental works. The councillors rued that the RWAs were “unconstitutional” as its members were not elected constitutionally. Demanding the dissolution of the same,Ravinder Rawal,former president,municipal corporation said,“These RWAs are self styled bodies with no legality.”

No more burials,Phase IX ground gets cleaned
MOHALI: With the local administration,on the demand of area residents,prohibiting the burials at a vacant site of Wakf Board in Phase IX here,the work to clean the ground for utilisation of some other purpose began on Wednesday. SDM R P S Walia,along with Municipal Council Executive Officer Amana Kumar Goel,visited the spot and put on job 10 sweepers of civic body till the whole ground gets cleaned.It was recently when the area residents had objected to the burial of a Muslim body at the ground that the local administration had made the Muslim community to agree that no more burials would be performed at the ground.

Mohali residents oppose construction of school
MOHALI: The residents of Phase IX here today strongly opposed the opening of a government school in a park in the area and did not allowed a team of the Education Department to begin the work to construct the school building there. The trouble began when a team of Education Department along with labourers and masons came and began measurements to begin the construction work in the park. Soon local Congress MLA Balbir Sidhu reached the spot.

Foundation stone of community centre laid
Mayor Anu Chatrath laid the foundation stone of a community centre in Sector 49 on Wednesday. Being built on an area of 1.64 acre,an amount of Rs 4 crore would be spent on building the community centre. The community centre would be the first in the city to have a swimming pool. The new centre will have a banquet hall and rooms and a sampark centre.

Chandigarh resident held with pirated DVDs
MOHALI: A resident of Sector 52,Chandigarh,Mohinder Singh,was arrested with a large number of pirated VCDs and DVDs,the police said here on Wednesday. The accused was held from his shop in Phase XI here. A music company official Rajesh Verma approached the police that the accused deals with pirated discs from his mobile phone sale and service shop. The police,along with Verma,raided the shop and recovered 240 VCDs and 90 DVDs,which were alleged to be pirated. A case under relevant Sections of the Copyright Act has been lodged.
