A woman was mowed down by a recklessly driven speeding bus on Kharar-Ropar stretch of National Highway-21 near Sahoran village,3 km from Kharar this evening,the police said. The deceased was identified as Sukhwinder Kaur,aged around 50 years,of Kapurthala. Kaur’s husband Satnam Singh told the police that they were on their way from Kapurthala to Chandigarh in their car and had stopped at Sahoran village for a tea break. “After having tea,when my wife was crossing the highway,a speeding Punjab Roadways bus coming from Ropar side ran over her,” revealed Satnam,while adding that his wife succumbed to her critical injuries in the hospital. The police have arrested and later released on bail the killer bus driver Sohan Singh of Rajpura for causing death by rash and negligent driving.

Foetus found in Kharar
An aborted foetus was found abandoned in Gobind Colony here this morning,the police said. Satnam Singh,a tubewell operator,told the police that when he was on his way to his duty at around 5.15 am ,he saw a bag lying abandoned in the way and on opening it,he was shocked to find an aborted foetus. The police have shifted the foetus to the Civil Hospital for medical examination and booked an unknown woman for concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body under Section 318 of the IPC against.

2 held with mobile company’s records
The district police have arrested two persons for stealing voluminous records of a leading mobile phone service provider and trying to destroy it by selling it to a scrap dealer in Zirakpur. While Shakeel Khan,a native of Gazipur in Uttar Pradesh,was reportedly working as security guard with the company,Vijay Chaurasiya,a native of Gopalganz in Bihar ,was a scrap dealer,the police said.

On a tip-off,the CIA wing of the district police caught hold of the duo after they had allegedly stolen the records pertaining to the year 2003-07 and were going to sale it in scrap to earn quick bucks. The police booked both the accused on the charges of theft and recovery of stolen articles under Sections 360 and 411 of the IPC.

In another case of theft,a resident of Vikas Nagar,Chandigarh Pradeep Kumar was allegedly caught red-handed while stealing the sanitary goods from the Military K-Area in Dhakoli near Zirakpur.

Virk’s trial: Arguments on prosecution sanction,framing charges adjourned
A Special Court in Mohali on Saturday once again adjourned the arguments on consideration of prosecution sanction and framing of charges against former Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra and Punjab Sarbdeep Singh Virk in a high-profile corruption,disproportionate assets and criminal case registered against him by Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on September 8,2007.

Retired senior IPS officer,through his counsel,today appeared before the court of Special Judge Rajinder Aggarwal but since the judge was on leave,the matter was posted to July 1.

Women held for chain snatching
Two women were arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in chain snatching near the Nada Sahib gurdwara on Saturday. They were produced in the court and sent to judicial custody. The police recovered two gold bracelets worth Rs 45,000,which they had allegedly snatched. An FIR under Section 382 of IPC was registered against them at the Chandimandir Police Station on April 4,2009. Both the accused,Nachho and Babli,are residents of Patiala.

Doc,nurse exchange blows over accounts
A heated exchange of words between a medical officer and his subordinate staff nurse over not maintaining accounts of primary health center in Nohni led them to take the matter to the Mullana Police on Saturday. Reportedly,PHC medical officer Dr Harsimranjit Singh had asked the staff nurse to submit the details of expenditure prior to March 3. But the nurse,Indu,kept putting off the matter. The MO then told her that he knew more funds were lying with her than she had informed the PHC about. During discussion,Singh pushed her and she fell on the floor. The entire subordinate staff protested against his behaviour and approached the police to lodge a complaint against him. The SHO called Singh to the police station for an amicable settlement. When he reached there,When the staff already present there again started protesting. During the chaos,the nurse slapped Singh,flaring up the issue. Both parties have been called to appear at the police station on Sunday.

Car catches fire,FIR lodged
A car parked inside a Sector-8 residence caught fire in the early hours of Saturday. Rahul Nagpal,owner of the car said: “Around 1 am,we saw flames erupting from the car.” An FIR has been lodged at the Sector-7 police station in this regard,said Nagpal.

INTUC observes May Day
The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) observed May Day on Saturday. Employees of different unions based in various departments of UT Administration and Municipal Corporation attended the programme. Chief guest Mayor Anu Chatrath assured workers that all their demands will be considered. INTUC president Kulbir Singh highlighted the demands of workers,including regularisation of services of daily wagers,EPF and medical facilities to be provided to daily wagers and service to family members on compassionate ground,among others.

Trade unions observe Labour Day at Ambala
Trade unions,including bank employees’ associations and postal unions,held meetings to mark the celebration of labour Day on Saturday. Railway workers also organised a function,where NRMU leaders threw light on the importance of the day. NRMU Divisional Secretary C S Bajwa addressed the meeting. Local BJP MLA Anil Vij also attended a meeting convened by the Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh.

NTUI holds rally in Sector 18
Members of the New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI) organised a rally on Saturday outside the Sector-18 electricity office. A large number of industrial workers and employees of UT and Punjab and members of Stree Morcha participated in the rally that was addressed by leaders of various trade unions including Bhag Mal Rana,Gopal Dutt Joshi,Ram Sarup and Om Prakash. ens

Nahan school wins ICSE debate
ICSE schools from the tricity participated in the annual ICSE inter-school debate competition hosted by St Xavier’s High School,Panchkula on Saturday. Yadavindra Public School principal Dr Harish Dhillon presided over the debate that saw students share insights on the yopic: ‘Is Right to Education a step in ending elitism in education? Panchkula St Xavier’s principal George S Shear said that such activities are an important milestone in the “co-curricular ladder of a student’s life”. Carmel Convent Sr Sec School,Nahan ,led by Ruchir Kohli and Divyank Bhardwaj won the debate with St Xavier’s High School,Panchkula,bagging the runners up trophy. Nupur Arora from St Xavier’s High School,Panchkula was adjudged as Best Speaker.

Open House held at PEC
As many as 650 students from more then 25 schools of the city participated in the Open House organised by the Punjab Engineering College. Models were displayed by the various engineering departments of the institution. Among the projects showcased,the first prize was bagged by “Computer Controlled Multi Purpose Machine” made by Vineet Kumar,Arjun Bhasin,Aseem Grover,Eshesh Gupta and Manik Mahalotra of the Mechanical Engineering department.

The second prize went to the “Blind Guidance System” by Amritpal S Saini of the computer science department while the third prize went to “Highway Automization with Toll Tax Collection Model” by Aakash Chaudhary,Pranav Jaswal and Pulkit Aggarwal from the Electrical and Electronics department.

“The main aim of the event was to motivate students towards the field of science and technology and make them familiar with the developments in this field,” said Professor K K Garg,member of the training and placement committee.

Labour Day observed at AKSIPS
AKSIPS-41,Chandigarh,felicitated its Class IV employees on the occasion of Labour Day on Saturday. Various food and confectionery items were gift wrapped and presented to the helpers by Principal Jagjit Sekhon. A widow,whose husband had worked as helper,was given a job in the school besides a cheque of Rs 30,000 with contributions made by students,staff and the management.

Labour Day celebrated at Bhavan Vidyalaya
Labour Day was celebrated at the Bhavan Vidyalaya on Saturday. A special assembly was organised to felicitate Group-D staff. As a token of acknowledgement and appreciation,gifts were given to them. Head Girl Tanya Sharma and Vice-Captain Ruchira Bahuguna thanked them for working round-the-clock to facilitate students and the teaching staff. Various competitions were also held to mark the day. A duet singing competition,with patriotism as the theme,was held for students of Class VI to VIII. Poster-making competition was also held on the theme of Labour Day,in which students from Class IX to XII raised motivating slogans.

Blood donation camp organised by Hansraj Public School
A blood donation camp was organised by the Hansraj Public School in association with the Oriental Bank of Commerce,Sector-6,on Saturday. Over 200 units of blood were collected during the camp,which was inaugurated by Jaya Bhardwaj,principal of the school. The camp was held under the medical expertise and supervision of staff and doctors of department of Transfusion Medicine,PGI,Chandigarh.

Gurukul students celebrate Labour Day
Students of The Gurukul,Sector-20,Panchkula,expressed their gratitude towards the support staff on the occasion of Labour Day on Saturday. In a special assembly organised in the campus,students thanked nannies,peons,drivers,conductors,security guards,gardeners and sweepers of the school. They also presented hand-made cards to them.

Aero Club launched at Satluj Public School
The Aero Club was launched at the Satluj Public School by Wing Commander D P Sabharwal,vice-chairman of the Aeronautical Society of India,on Saturday. A presentation on aviation and space-related career options was given to over 180 students. The club will hold activities like aerospace badges,certificates,aero scrapbook presentations,inter-school aero club competitions and visits to Air Force bases. Principal Krit Serai said,“Aviation and space industry are the future of India. The school wants to keep students technologically advanced.”

India HR Club portal launched at ITFT-CMA conference
As part of events to mark the International Labour Day,a portal,‘India HR Club’ was launched at a corporate-academia interface on “Bridging Youth Employability Skill Gaps” jointly organised by the ITFT College and Chandigarh Management Association (CMA) at Hoshiarpur village in Mohali on Saturday. The portal provides comprehensive information on resource management,resource development,talent management and training besides providing information on emerging trends in global HR practices. ITFT executive director Gulshan Sharma said two greatest concerns of the employers today were finding good workforce and training them. CMA general secretary J N Vohra said finding workforce with employability or job readiness skills is a real challenge faced by employers.
