The National Executive of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has decided to dissolve all units of the Chandigarh Pradesh Youth Congress at all levels with immediate effect in view of the forthcoming organisational elections.

The National Executive of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has decided to dissolve all units of the Chandigarh Pradesh Youth Congress at all levels with immediate effect in view of the forthcoming organisational elections. These would include all cells,departments and ‘Aam Admi Ka Sipahi’ divisions. Meanwhile,a meeting of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee was held on Saturday to discuss the enrolment of members in IYC. Election coordinator for Chandigarh and Punjab,Anirudh Singh,appealed for maximum enrolment in the youth wing of the party. The leaders also maintained two minutes silence in the memory of Mahila Congress vice-president Baljit Sodhi.

85-yr-old woman dies in scuffle as policemen try to arrest grandson
Patiala: An 85-year-old woman died in the Ranjit Nagar area of the town on Friday night following a melee that ensued over the arrest of her grandson from her house. According to sources,Kartar Kaur,a resident of Ranjit Nagar under the Tripuri police station,died after a few policemen,led by ASI Maghar Singh,forcibly tried to take her younger grandson Rajwinder Singh into custody. Rajwinder is a BTech student. While the police party had come looking for her elder grandson Charanjit,wanted in a case of brawl,on not finding him at home,the cops tried to forcibly take Rajwinder into custody. Kartar protested against this as Rajwinder had an examination on Saturday. In the confusion that ensued,Kartar was apparently pushed and banged her head on the gate of the house and collapsed. On seeing her injured,the policemen reportedly fled. She died on the spot. While the family initially accused the cops of being responsible for her death,they reportedly backtracked later under alleged pressure from the police. SP (D) Pannu said the matter had been resolved and a compromise reached between the family and the cops. He said there was some misunderstanding,saying “why would anyone push an 85-year-old woman?”.

Two nurses injured in acid attack
ROPAR: Two nurses sustained burn injuries when a youth reportedly threw acid on them near the local Telephone Exchange on Friday night. As per reports,three nurses were returning after duty from Sharma Eye hospital in Giani Zail Singh Nagar when a youth threw acid on them,injuring Anu Bhola and Jaswinder Kaur. Anu was admitted in the local Sangha hospital while Jaswinder Kaur,who sustained minor wounds,was discharged after treatment. DSP Bhupinder Singh Thind and SHO (City) Manvir Singh Bajwa reached the spot and started investigation. A case under Section 307 of the IPC has been registered in this regard. No arrest has,however,been made yet.

Ambala goes without power
AMBALA: Despite removal of a technical snag in the Dhulkot Power House,Ambala City,on Friday,the town remained without electricity for a major chunk of Saturday. Supply reportedly had been diverted to Chandigarh where a power grid had developed some defect. According to official sources,the power grid at Chandigarh suddenly developed a snag due to which the system had to be shut down. Power load was restricted at Ambala to feed Chandigarh under orders from higher authorities,officials said. The consumers and industry owners remained harassed due to unscheduled cuts imposed during the day.

Naib Tehsildar dies in accident
AMBALA: Naib Tehsildar Hansi Surjit Singh (54) died in a road accident when his scooter was hit by a tanker near Jandli flyover on GT Road on Friday evening. The deceased was on his way home when he was run over by the tanker. He died on the spot. The dead body was handed over to family members after postmortem on Saturday.      

One tests positive for swine flu
A 42-year-old resident of Manimajra tested positive for swine flu on Saturday. Doctors said his condition is stable and tamiflu is being administered to him. The city has seen a sharp dip in the number of positive H1N1 cases in the last two weeks even as the doctors suggest that people should continue taking precautions against the virus.
