2 die of swine flu
MOGA/FARIDKOT: A resident of Moga died of suspected swine flu at the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana on Thursday. The deceased Tejinder Singh was a resident of the Gill Road. The patient was referred to the CMC after his blood samples were collected. He died around 3.30 am. His report is still awaited. Muktsar,too,reported a swine flu death on Friday. Sharanjit Kaur (30) of Gidderbaha,who was admitted in a Bathinda hospital,died after delivering a dead baby this afternoon. She was seven months pregnant. This is the second death in Muktsar district due to swine flu. Earlier,Jaswinder Kaur (29) from Doda village died on December 21,ten days after delivering a baby.
Three absconding jail inmates held
JALANDHAR: The district police today arrested three absconding inmates of the central jail. Among those arrested was Gurpreet Gopi who fled from outside the jail on December 10,after his accomplices attacked the police officers. He was arrested by the Ambala police and two pistols were recovered from him and brought to Jalandhar on a production warrant,said SP (city) S K Kalia. Around 18 cases of loot have been registered against Gopi in different police stations of Punjab and Haryana. Another accused Sunny,who fled from the civil hospital yesterday was arrested during a raid at the Bhavreek Chowk area. The third accused Joginder Singh had gone absconding from Rama Mandi area on July 30. Four cases of murder have been lodged against him in different police stations of the Jalandhar district,Kalia said,adding he was arrested from Rajasthan by a team of district police.
VB arrests college principal for graft
The Vigilance Bureau arrested the principal of Government Art and Craft institute here on Friday for accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000. SSP Sukhdev Singh of the bureau said Ramesh Kumar was caught red-handed while accepting the money from Kulwant Singh,a clerk at the government ITI,Rayya,for his promotion.
Two arrested with 2 kg heroin
AMRITSAR: The state special operation cell (SSOC) arrested two persons and recovered 2 kilograms of heroin from them here on Friday. Those arrested have been identified as Gumit Singh,a resident of Bundala (Nawan Pind),and Charnjit Singh,a resident of Fatehpur Araian,said SSP P K Rai of the special cell. A case has been registered under Sections 21,29,61and 85 of the NDPS Act.
BKU to hold agitation for higher MSP
The Punjab and Haryana units of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) have decided to launch an agitation in New Delhi in March to demand higher minimum support price (MSP) for foodgrains. Despite increase in the cost of production,the hike in wheat MSP this year has only been Rs 20 per quintal. Punjab and Haryanas contribution to the central pool is the highest among states,but its farmers are in a debt trap and are committing suicides, the union leaders said at a meeting.
CM approves joint venture for academy
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal gave approval to a joint venture with a Banglore-based group to run Sri Dashmesh Academy. Meena Ganesh,CEO and MD of the Manipal Kindergarten to Twelve (K-12) group,said they impart education in different countries,including 1,300 schools in India. They also provide online tuitions under the distant education programme. The venture will start classes from the next academic session.
