Man gets 8 years in jail for killing wife
Ambala: A court awarded an NRI 8-year imprisonment in a dowry case on Friday. However,the parents of the accused were acquitted,giving them benefit of doubt. NRI Sarbjit Singh,a resident of Tamnauli village and living in Italy,married Gurpreet Kaur,daughter of Subedar Kipral Singh and a resident of village Ugala,in 2006. According to complaint lodged by the father of the deceased,Sarbjit returned to Italy after marriage and his daughter stayed back. But when Sarbjit came back from Italy,he started harassing the victim and made a demand for new car saying that the car given in dowry was of poor quality. On April 11,2008,Gurpreet died after she was compelled to inhale some poisonous substance. The Mullana police had registered a case of murder against Sarbjit and his parents and the court announced decision on Friday.

Bail plea of dera chief deferred to Sept 7
Ambala: The hearing on the bail application of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was once again deferred to September 7 by a special CBI court on Saturday. The dera chief could not appear in the court in the view of shortage of security arrangements at Sirsa because the administration had shown its inability to make arrangements a day prior to the Independent Day. The court listened arguments on the statements given by witness Sukhdev Singh in the Ranjit Singh murder case.

84 freedom fighters to be honoured today
Ambala: Eighty-four freedom fighters and 64 war widows will be honoured in recognition of the sacrifices made by them during the national freedom movement at the War Heroes’ Memorial Stadium in Ambala Cantonment on Sunday. Haryana Public Health and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala will preside over the function and would hoist the national flag. According to deputy commissioner S P Srow,all arrangements to celebrate the day had been completed. Meanwhile,an alert has been sounded in the districts of Ambala,Kurukshetra,Panchkula,Yamunanagar and Kaithal as a security measure in the view of the celebrations of the Independence Day. Security has been beefed at all the important and sensitive places.

Man crushed by unidentified vehicle
Ambala: Javed,a resident of Badayun district in Uttar Pradesh,died after he was run over by an unidentified vehicle at the Shehzadpur bus stand today. He died on the spot. The police have registered a case against the unidentified person.

Mid-day meal workers protest in Ambala
Ambala: The mid-day meal workers of the Ambala district held a demonstration and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for adopting double standards to solve the problems of workers. The agitating workers opposed the decision of the government to hand over the mid-day meal work to the self-help groups functioning in villages. They also opposed the policy to give work on contract in the districts of Kurukshetra,Faridabad and Gurgaon. They demanded that the wages at the rate of Rs 1,000 announced by the Central government. The demonstration was led by Mid-day Workers’ Union Secretary Raj Kumar and CITU leader Tek Chand.

AKSIPS students celebrate I-Day
CHANDIGARH: Once again the air was filled with the spirit of independence and heart-rending slogans of Vande Matram from the tiny tots of AKSIPS in 41-B,which held the competition of patriotic songs and rhymes on its premises on Saturday. The programme came alive with Principal Jagjit Sekhon saluting and paying obeisance to the people who laid their lives to fight tyranny and oppression of the British.

Seminar held at SD College
CHANDIGARH: The Commerce Club of GGDSD College,Sector 32-C,Chandigarh,organised an introductory seminar for the students of commerce and management in the college on Saturday.
Alumni of the college,R P S Khurana,a CS,and Krishan Juneja,a practicing CA,shared their experiences about the courses like CA,CS and ICWA. They also guided the students to work on and hone a set of skills that go a long way in succeeding in these professions. These included the need to be good at numbers,to have a fair amount of analytical skills,comprehensive communication skills and the ability to reproduce matter. The talks were followed by a lively interactive session Seminar held at SD College.

Dry day today,liquor vends shut from 7 am to 5 pm
MOHALI: To observe Independence Day as dry day,all the liquor shops across Mohali district will remain closed on Sunday from 7 am to 5 pm,said Assistant Excise and Taxation Officer (AETC) Baldeep Kaur. Besides liquor vends,restaurants,hotels,clubs and any other such places have also been prohibited from serving liquor during this period. She said special enforcement teams,comprising Excise and Taxation Inspectors,have been formed to ensure the enforcement of the ban order and any vend or place found violating the order would be fined Rs 50,000 as per the Punjab Excise Policy for 2010-11.

281 slum dwellers examined,treated at free medical camp on I-Day eve
MOHALI: As many as 281 slum dwellers were examined and treated at a free medical check-up camp organized by the district health department on the eve of Independence Day at Balimik Colony in Phase VI here today. The camp was part of the series of camps held across the state on the directions of Health and Family Welfare Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla to provide free medical health services to those residing in urban slum areas. Local MLA Balbir Sidhu inaugurated the camp while Deputy Secretary,Health and Family Welfare,Punjab,Mukhtiar Singh presided over the inaugural function,said District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Jai Singh. A team of specialist doctors,led by Civil Surgeon Dr PK Sridhar and Civil Hospital SMO incharge Dr Rajiv Bhalla,examined and treated the slum dwellers and provided free medicines to the needy.
