Man shoots son
Bathinda: A man allegedly shot his son in Chughe Kalan village yesterday evening after he asked for the details of money received after leasing the family land on contract. Inquiry Officer Paramjit Singh said Buta Singh was drunk when he had an argument with his son Amritpal. He then shot Amritpal with his licensed weapon. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
New date for Army entrance exam
Ludhiana: The entrance exam for recruitment of sepoys in the Army,which was held on November 29 has been cancelled and the re-test will be on January 30,2010 at the military station in Faridkot. Those who had taken the exam can get fresh admit cards from the recruitment office in Ferozepur from December 25-30. The paper had been leaked from Amristar and a fresh date was announced after a probe.
Boparai appointed as OSD to Speaker
CHANDIGARH: Daya Singh Boparai has been appointed Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Punjab Speaker. He assumed charge on Thursday at the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Singh retired from the post of Block Primary Education Officer,Dhianpur in Gurdaspur. Jagdish Sahni,Chief Parliamentary Secretary,Excise and Taxation was also present on the occasion.
Health dept staff union polls
CHANDIGARH: Bhupinder Pipat was elected president and Kesar Singh senior vice-president of the Punjab Health and Medical Directorate Employees Union. Rajinder Kaur was also elected as vice-president against a seat reserved for women.
Ophthalmological society to meet
AMRITSAR: The Punjab Opthalmological Society (POS) will hold its 13th annual conference at Sri Guru Ram Dass Institute of Medical Sciences and Research,Mehta road,from December 18-20. The Amritsar Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) has joined hands with the POS to arrange the conference. Dr Daljit Singh Dhillon,president of POS and Dr Shakeen Singh Professor Ophthalmology and organising secretary said 400 eye surgeons have already registered with the organising committee. The conference has been named Eye Opener
Missing girl: alert sounded in states
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has handed over the investigation of a 19-year-old girl missing since December 15,2008,to the ADGP (Crime),Punjab. Following this,the Punjab Police has sounded an inter-state alert to find missing Napinder Kaur. The details of the girl have been circulated in states including Himachal Pradesh,J&K,Haryana,Rajasthan.
State strictly implementing PNDT Act
CHANDIGARH: Health and Family Welfare Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla said news items published in various newspaper on Punjabs foeticide cases,based on a reply to a question in Rajya Sabha,were not correct. Till 2009,105 cases have been registered and 15 convictions have been reported,the minister said,adding that the state government was strictly implementing the PNDT Act. The Sample Registration Survey showed improvement in child sex ratio. She said the Health Department had honoured 28 panchayats for improving sex ratio,and 60 more would be honoured in January.
Punjab pediatricians body awarded
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab branch of Indian Academy of Pediatricians has been awarded first prize in three national programmes on breast feeding,ORS and teenage problems,said its secretary Ashwani Kumar Juneja. He said the awards ceremony would be held on January 7 in Hyderabad during the inaugural function of 47th national conference of the academy.
