Balmiki Samaj opposes elections of Cong delegates
Members of the Balmiki Samaj,Ambala Cantonment,opposed the election of Congress delegates to the HPCC and DCC,which was held by the Central Returning Officer Sewa Ram from Delhi. During the two-day election held at the PWD Rest House here,216 booth presidents were elected,besides a state-level delegate and six district-level delegates. Madan Lal,Sohan Lal,Harlal and Raja Ram criticised the procedure adopted by the RO in the selection of polling booth presidents and delegates. They alleged that Balmiki Samaj was neglected and proper information was not given to members of the Samaj,who wanted to seek election. RO Sewa Ram,however,said the election was transparent and nobody was ignored.

SIFF celebrates first anniversary
Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF),a Bangalore-based NGO,celebrated the first anniversary of its Chandigarh Chapter at the Leisure Valley,Sector 10,on Sunday. Comprising only men,the NGO was formed in 2005 to fight against dowry harassment. Interestingly,the Chandigarh Police were conspicuous by its evidence,despite invitations having been sent to Chandigarh and Mohali SSPs. “That the police will avoid being part of the celebrations was expected,considering the shortcomings within the department,” said an organisation official. SIFF,which started the Chandigarh chapter in July,last year has been guiding and lending support to families implicated in false dowry cases. ENS

Photo journalists recording a play shunted out of Tagore Theatre
The play — Goswami Tulsidas — directed,written and enacted by Shekhar Sen,a Mumbai-based renowned theatre artist was interrupted on two occasions on Sunday evening,following which Home Secretary Ram Niwas asked his securitymen to escort the photojournalists out of the Tagore Theatre. Making a video or clicking pictures during the play was not allowed. However,a person was caught making a video of the play on his mobile phone,to which artist Shekhar Sen reacted with folded hands saying “his play is worship” for him and nobody should make a video of it. A few minutes later,somebody from the audience,allegedly a lensman tried to click a picture. The play again got interrupted and this time UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas instructed his men to ask all photojournalists to leave the venue. Complying with the orders,the securitymen escorted all photojournalists out of the venue and did not allow them to take pictures of the play.

Net qualifiers exempted from PhD test: PU
Controller of Examination,Panjab University,Professor A K Bhandari said students who have already cleared the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) are exempted from appearing for the PhD entrance test to be conducted by the University for admission to the 2010-11 PhD programmes.

Environment Week celebrated
The ‘Environment Week’ was celebrated by students of Class I and II of Ryan International School,Chandigarh. The week included activities like nature walk,tree plantation,slogan writing,fancy dress competition,green village,and healthy tiffin.

Bedi to select students for management courses
Dr Kiran Bedi would visit Aryans campus on July 26 to interview needy candidates for MBA and BBA courses (11 seats each). The selected students would get paid for their entire education. Interested applicants may visit Aryans Group of Colleges,village Nepra,on the Chandigarh-Patiala Highway,Rajpura on July 26 at 8 am. Dr. Anshu Kataria,chairman,Aryans Group said the selection of the candidates would be done by Dr Kiran Bedi and her Navjyoti team. During the selection process,different parameters like merit,means,parents status,background,achievements would be taken into consideration.

Online voting at Ryan’s elections
Ryan International School,Chandigarh,announced there would be online voting for elections to the students council. Principal Poonam Sharma appreciated said she was proud the true essence of democracy is been inculcated among students.

Condolence meet held for CTU manager0
The workers of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking,trade union members and officials of the UT Administration on Sunday offered their condolences on the last prayer meeting observing the death of CTU general manager Surinder Kumar Dahiya on July 14. The condolence meet was held at Sanatan Dharam Mandir,Sector 27. Dahiya had joined the CTU on September 13,1984,as a works manager and was later promoted to a general manager’s position.

Tree plantation drive at PGIMER
PGIMER Director Prof K K Talwar inaugurated the tree plantation drive in the campus on Sunday. Nearly 12,000 trees of 46 different varieties will be planted during this week in the hospital campus and residential area of Sector 24.

Meet held on vocational education
An interactive meet on emerging trends in vocational education and training was organised by the Chandigarh Management Association (CMA) at ITFT,Chandigarh. Speaking on the occasion,Dr Alistair Baker from Motherwell College,Scotland,said that for imparting practical training to students,new methods and technologies should be used.
