Youths murder: 2 more arrested
Mohali :The Mohali police arrested two more persons accused in the murder of the Chandigarh resident on June 19. Five other accused were arrested a day ago. The police today arrested Sunil alias Sheru and Sachin alias Tarzan for the murder of the 32-year-old contractual employee with the income tax department,Varinder Saini,alias Goldy on Saturday. Goldy was brutally murdered with sharp-edged weapons in a busy street of Shahi Majra village,Mohali. His accomplice Sonu was critically wounded in the attack. Varinder,who had a one-year-old daughter and was a resident of Sector 22,Chandigarh,had gone to meet his friend Sohanlal at Shahi Majra village and both were standing near a juice shop when motorcycle-borne assailants attacked them. The police said prior enmity is the reason for the murder as the two groups have witnessed heated brawls in the past too. Sunil,was arrested today is a resident of Sector 43 Chandigarh while Sachin is a resident of Pulsora. The police said the two were unemployed and are in their late twenties.
Bus conductor hit by train,dies
Dera Bassi:Balbir Singh (20),a resident of Ramgarh Bhudda,was found dead near railway track under the flyover in Dera Bassi. Though the deceased appears to have died after being hit by a train,the family is suspecting foul play behind his death. According to Railway Police In charge Ranjeet Singh,the body was found below the Railway flyover near Ghaggar river in Dera Bassi on Tuesday morning. On reaching the spot,they recovered a mobile phone from his pocket and informed his relatives about the incident. Talking to the police,the family suspected some foul play behind his death. They told police that Balbir was employed with Punjab Road Transport Corporation as a bus conductor. He always used his motorcycle to go to and come back from Sector-43 bus stand. But on Monday,he did not return from his duty and his bike was also found parked at the bus stand. The driver of his bus informed the family that Balbir was carrying Rs 30,000,the accumulated bus fare and a ticketing machine. The body of the deceased has been handed-over to his family after conducting the post-mortem and inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC have been initiated. The postmortem report revealed that the man was hit by a train,while further investigations into the matter are on,said the police.
No power,residents gherao sub-station
PANCHKULA: Around 200 residents of Sector 8,10,12 and 15,gheraoed the power sub-station in Industrial Area,Phase 1 around 11.45 pm. They were protesting as there had been no power supply since 4 pm,after the city was hit by a storm. They also complained that the power supply had been erratic since the last three days. XEN P K Goel reached the spot to pacify the irked residents. Police was also called to handle the mob.
Two die due to extreme heat
Ambala:Two person died in the last 24 hours at Ambala Cantonment due to extreme heat.Om Prakash (58),a resident of Punjabi Bagh who suffered a stroke and was rushed to the civil hospital. He was referred to PGI Chandigarh but he died on the way. The second victim was a beggar at the railway station who died of the excessive heat. He was found dead on platform number 1. A middle aged woman waiting for the bus also fainted in the sun. She was taken to the doctor who gave her first aid.
Acute shortage of drinking water supply
AMBALA:The residents of several localities of Maheshnagar and Gobind Nagar area in Ambala Cantonment are facing acute shortage of drinking water supply for the last 4-5 days. Vashishatnagar and Dayal Bagh areas were adversally affected with no water supply.The residents have to fetch water from distant places and many have resorted to the old system of handpumps Residents of Tharba village near here are getting water supply from alternate sources ever since the public health department tubewell went out of order in 2007. Similar conditions prevail in Babyal village where the department had removed underground pipes to replace these with new pipes. But a period of three months has elapsed and no pipes have been replaced. According to information,there are five tubewells feeding the area. Three of these are out of service and the water supplies are being made from two tubewells only. The PHD authorities said that repair of tube wells was in progress and the supplies would be normalised in the coming days.
Contractual staff at GMSH-16 not to go on strike
CHANDIGARH:The contractual staff at GMSH-16 and the hospital authorities have reportedly resolved their pending issues as the staff has decided against going on a strike on Wednesday. With the pending salaries of the staff on contract not released on time,the staff members had earlier decided to register a protest.
Naib tehsildar taken to police station,let off after questioning
Ambala:Naib Tehsildar Mewa Singh of Ambala Cantonment sub-tehsil was taken to the police station by the Cantonment Sadar police at midnight. The senior authorities had received information about the presence of a political leader at Singhs residence and some immoral activity going on there. On reaching Mewa Singhs government residence at Palika Vihar on Jagadhari Road around midnight the police found a maid and her 18-year-old son at the house. Singh stated that the woman was a housemaid who worked at his residence and prepared meals. He claimed that no other person was present at his residence and police had received wrong information. However,SHO Baljit Singh said the naib tehsildar was let off after questioning.
