Ambala :Three persons died and 12,including a woman,were injured in separate road accidents in Ambala district on Tuesday. Two persons died after a Maxi cab hit a truck near Kadasan village on the National Highway-73. The deceased have been identified as Billu,a resident of Chhoti Kodi,and Arjun,a resident of Shehzadpur Majra. The injured include driver of Maxi cab Sukhdev,truck driver Chander Prakash,Hardip,Mam Chand,Aarti,Harnam,Ravi Vijaypal,Vineet,Harinder and Kamleshwar. In another accident,motorcyclist Bitoo,a resident of Chandigarh died after his vehicle skid and fell into a ditch near Jawaharnagar village on the Ambala-Dehradun National Highway.

Kidney transplant racket case: Hearing deferred to July 24
AMBALA: Hearing in the high-profile kidney transplant racket case was deffered to July 24 by the special CBI Judge A S Narang here on Tuesday. The arguments between the CBI and the defence had been completed earlier. During the arguments,the defence had argued that the accused had been framed. But the CBI refuted the arguments and held that the case was framed on the basis of facts and evidences. However,one of the accused Dr Jiwan,present in the court,alleged that the CBI had involved Dr Amit and others falsely arguing that kidney could not be transplanted forcibly. He said they were innocent and had full faith in the judiciary. Besides Dr Amit and Dr Jiwan,other accused include Dr K K Aggarwal,Linda,Manoj and others who are facing the charges about two-and-a-half year and are in jail.

Mohali Civil Hospital gets blood bank
MOHALI: A blood bank was opened at Civil Hospital in Phase VI here. Till now,the requirement of blood at local hospital was met from blood banks at Kharar Civil Hospital or Chandigarh PGIMER. Dr J P Singh,Director,Health Services,Punjab,inaugurated the blood bank. Speaking on the occasion,he stressed the need for voluntary donation of blood and asked the donors to raise a team of regular blood donors. Dr P K Shridhar,Civil Surgeon,Mohali,stressed the need for making voluntary no-remunerated blood donation a successful movement and thus eliminating professional blood donation. Voluntary blood donors,who had donated blood several times were honoured on this occasion.

Rs 50,000 snatched from woman
ZIRAKPUR: Two men riding on a scooter snatched Rs 50,000 from a woman of Dhakoli village here on Tuesday afternoon. According to police,Rajwinder Kaur had withdrawn the money from the Punjab National Bank on Zirakpur-Patiala highway and put the money in a polythene bag. As she was returning home along with her mother in a rickshaw,two scooter-borne youths snatched the polythene bag containing the money and sped away. The police suspected that the snatchers were following the mother-daughter duo from the bank. SHO Yogi Raj said after getting the information,a police team was sent to the spot to investigate the matter. Preliminary investigations revealed that a person named Rajinder Kumar was standing near the victim and went out of the bank after the she collected the amount from the counter,said the SHO. A case has been registered and suspects would be arrested soon,he said.

Mohali parking lots in for facelift
MOHALI: THE parking lots in Mohali are in for a facelift with the local civic body initiating the work to re-carpet the parking lots in different parts of the city. To begin with,the re-carpeting of parking lot in Phase 3B2 was kicked of by the District Planning Committee chairman N K Sharma here on Tuesday. Phase 3B2 parking lot,which was one of the most crowded in the city,was in a very bad shape since long,and will be re-carpeted at an estimated cost of Rs 9.8 lakh. Speaking on the occasion,Sharma said the basic civic infrastructure in Mohali will soon be improved and upgraded with major thrust on roads,parking lots,parks,cleanliness,drinking water and streetlights. He accused the Congress,which ruled the local civic body for over three years,for the present plight of the city. “After taking over reigns of the civic body,the ruling SAD-BJP combine has undertaken on large scale and priority to provide basic civic amenities to the locals and solve their problems and demands without any further delay,” he asserted.

Trains delayed by half an hour
AMBALA: Passengers remained stranded for over half an hour after overhead high-voltage electricity wires on the Ambala-Delhi rail line broke down on Tuesday. As a result,Swaran Shatabadi Express and a few other trains were delayed by around half an hour. The trains left Ambala Cantonment station after the overhead wires were repaired. The break down was caused near Mohri station a few kilometres from Ambala Cantonment.

INLD wins zila parishad polls
AMBALA: Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidates registered a victory in the Zila Parishad elections,the results of which were announced on Monday night. The INLD won 7 of the 14 seats. One independent candidate announced her support to the INLD.

Theft at house in Sector 11
PANCHKULA: A theft was reported at house number 10 in Sector 11 on Tuesday. The owner of the house Deepak Verma had gone on vacations with his family to Mussoorie. The theft took place on Sunday night but was discovered on Monday when the maid visited the house and saw the broken window of one of the rooms. Subsequently,Deepak was informed who returned home on Monday. Theft of Rs 45,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs 1.25 lakh was reported. The police have registered a case and started investigation.

HC stays arrest of Pankaj Bhardwaj
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday stayed the arrest of Pankaj Bhardwaj in the multi-crore Amritsar Improvement Trust land scam case. Bhardwaj is the advocate for Anand and Madhu Prakash in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case.On June 11,the Amritsar district court dismissed Bhardwaj’s anticipatory bail plea in the case. He is one of the 32 accused in the scam. He is wanted for his role as a director of a firm for allegedly purchasing prime property in Amritsar through forgery. The Amritsar Improvement Trust had gotten a case registered against the directors of the firm in 2007. The High Court also gave a stay on the arrest of former State Financial Commissioner B R Bajaj in the same case. It was during Bajaj’s tenure that the change of land use had been approved. Bajaj’s anticipatory bail plea had also been dismissed by the Amritsar District Court.

Lawyers demand chambers free of cost
Chandigarh: Lawyers at the district court on Tuesday held a meeting to form a committee to look into the issue related to free chambers at the new district court building coming up in Sector 43. The former presidents have joined hands and want to pursue authorities that they should be provided with chambers free of cost in the new building. Earlier in front of the chief justice,most of them had agreed to have self-financed chambers. But since not every member was ready for the same,the association had decided to give it a shot. If nothing materialises till July 31,the lawyers would opt for self-financed chambers.

Workshop for nurses gets under way at PGI
Chandigarh: A workshop on training of nurses on HIV/AIDS and ART under Global Fund for AIDS,Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) began at the National Institute of Nursing Education,PGIMER on Tuesday. The workshop will continue till June 19 in which 24 nurses from Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh are participating. In the consequent days,the nurses will deliberate on their role in managing patients with sexually transmitted infections,positive living,palliative care for people living with HIV/AIDS,complementary therapies in HIV and challenges faced by nurses.

4,500 cops promoted this year: Gill
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police has ordered 4,500 promotions,mainly of the personnel up to inspector level,this year,breaking the stagnation at various levels. Punjab Director General of Police P S Gill said the orders had come on the directions of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. On finding that denial of timely promotion due to various administrative hurdles was affecting the morale of the force,Gill said,they finalised seniority lists on priority and removed other hurdles.
From January this year,the DGP said,as many as 494 sub-inspectors had been promoted as inspectors,while 835 ASIs had been promoted as SIs,1,046 head constables as ASIs and 1,600 constables as head constables. He said more promotions would be made in the near future.

Capital punishment should go: Dal Khalsa
AMRITSAR: Sikh radical organisation Dal Khalsa on Tuesday expressed resentment against the Punjab government for not recommending to the Centre to abolish capital punishment. Quoting The Indian Express report regarding the home ministry asking for suggestion from states “whether a humane mode of execution of death sentence such as lethal injection should be adopted in place of the existing system of hanging”,Dal Khalsa said the state should have immediately sent a proposal against hanging. In its letter to the chief minister,the organisation appreciated the stand taken by the government of Tamil Nadu against capital punishment.

Traffic lessons through public address system
AMRITSAR: The Amritsar traffic police have started teaching traffic rules to commuters through public address systems. Recorded tapes are played on speakers installed at traffic signals and crossings,asking the commuters to wear helmets and stopping vehicles away from the zebra lines. Tow-away vehicles have been placed at strategic locations and a large number of traffic police men deployed to streamline traffic. Commissioner of Police Varinder Kumar said they were using both persuasion and enforcement measures to manage traffic. Complaint boxes have also been installed throughout the city. Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu released a booklet on traffic rules on Tuesday.

Queen’s Baton to reach Himachal on July 4
SHIMLA: The Queen’s Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games 2010 would arrive in Himachal Pradesh on July 4 at Mehatpur in Una and would cross various towns in the next two days. General Secretary of the HP Olympics Association Anurag Thakur said the relay would pass through Kangra,Dharamsala,Jawala Ji,Hamirpyr,Bilaspur,Shimla,Solan,Nahan,Poanta sahib and pass into Uttaranchal. “Special programmes would be arranged to receive the relay and school and college students would be involved in the event,” Thakur said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
